Michael Putland 1947 – 2019:
I was very sad to hear the passing of another iconic rock photographer Michael Putland aged 72. During the 1970s, his work was a staple feature in the UK music press. When I was editing the Five Glorious Nights Led Zeppelin at Earls Court 1975 book for Rufus Stone I had access to his amazing Led Zep Earls Court photos many of which were featured in the book – including the cover shot .
I was lucky enough to meet him at the Led Zeppelin From The Beginning 1963 – 1975 – Photo Exhibition at Proud Chelsea Gallery in August 20, 2015: The group image that appears on the cover of the book was one of the framed prints on show –as can be seen in the pic of myself with Michael. His work will live on in countless iconic images of a golden age…RIP

Planet Rock to celebrate Led Zeppelin’s music with symphonic rock concert:
We’ve delighted to announce that on Saturday 18th April 2020, Planet Rock will be celebrating one of the greatest bands of all time, Led Zeppelin, with a very special concert at the London Palladium.
Zeppelin Symphonic, The Music of Led Zeppelin – a Rock Celebration is an epic rock and orchestral concert experience and will feature over 50 performers on stage playing some of Led Zeppelin’s greatest songs over a two-hour set.
Alongside the rock band and symphony orchestra, there will special guest performers on the night including Inglorious frontman Nathan James and blues rock powerhouse Kris Barras.
Tickets to the Zeppelin Symphonic show at the London Palladium are priced from £34.50 including fees. They go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 9am on Friday 29th November.

Wembley Goaldiggers Football – November 25, 1979 – 40 years gone…
This may not be in with a shout of greatest sports pic in the world ever, but it’s a genuine all action reminder of a memorable afternoon of 40 years ago this week.
My old trusty Olympus trip just about captured the moment R. Plant rounded the advancing goalkeeper Mervyn Day (sorry West Ham fans!) to net a rather fine goal in his teams 3-1 win over LBC Radio. The occasion was the Annual Sun/Goaldiggers five a side football tournament at Wembley Arena. The date was Sunday November 25th 1979.
Robert was on great post Knebworth form that day. My good friend Tom Locke and I arrived in the early afternoon. The backstage gate was surrounded by fans eager to get a look at the celebrities of the day. The soccer superstars George Best, Bobby Moore, Stan Bowles etc mixing with the likes of actor Patrick Mower, Jasper Carrott and various members of ELO, Darts and Uriah Heep etc who were making up the teams. In the drizzling rain we eyed Robert’s Cherokee jeep as it drove around the car park and we enthusiastically greeted him. ‘’Jump in the back ‘’ said the singer in the greatest band in the world. Well it’s not an offer we could refuse and it was raining! So we clambered aboard, anxious not to put muddy footprints all over the seats.
Off we swept through the gates, passed the awaiting throng into the backstage area. The rest of the afternoon was a delight. We watched Robert do his stuff on the pitch -his team Power Plant with Ron Atkinson, singer Jess Conrad, the late Dave Dee and Jasper Carrott reached the semi finals.
He chatted with Britt Ekland, and was cheered on by various Swan Song personal who revealed to me Zep had scooped seven awards in the Melody Maker Poll due to be revealed the next Wednesday. Robert wore a tasty Knebworth yellow and black T shirt as worn by the video crew. He also wrote out a very nice insert message to go in the next TBL and took receipt of a fetching pair of blue and yellow Nike trainers (which spurred a mental note to self: get down to the local sports shop and invest in Nike trainers soon as!). Some off the cuff chat revealed his pride for the success of Knebworth and In Through The Out Door (‘’It’s all there in the end’’) and plans ahead (‘’We need to keep working now’’).
When signing autographs one wag shouted out ‘’When yer gonna play Manchester!?’’ Robert replied ‘’I want to play Manchester but it ain’t up to me mate!’’
And then he was off back to the Midlands, box of trainers in hand ready to try them out at the next Wednesday’s Melody Maker Poll Awards.
it was another incredibly exciting afternoon.
Great days from a time when I literally lived and breathed Led Zeppelin –with a bit of W.H.Smith retail frenzy where I worked , a few beers and a Wallbanger FC football match in between.

Melody Maker Poll Awards: November 28, 1979 – 40 years gone…
40 years ago on a late cold November afternoon in 1979, I walked into the plush surroundings of the Waldorf Hotel in London and ordered a vodka and lime at the bar just behind Richard Cole who was organising drinks for three quarters of Led Zeppelin.
The occasion was the annual Melody Maker Poll Awards for which Peter Grant had rounded up Robert, Bonzo and Jonesy to accept a remarkable seven awards. Richard Cole and assorted roadies and tech guys and Swan Song personel were in attendance.
I was there reporting it all for what would become Tight But Loose issue number 4. Some of the text of that report (unbeknown to me) would years later be suitably exaggerated in The Hammer Of The Gods book.
I remember spotting Robert wearing the pair of bright yellow and blue Nike trainers he’d acquired at the Wembley Goal Diggers soccer tournament the previous Sunday which I’d been along to watch. I made a mental note to seek out a similar pair on my return to Bedford – they were my style gurus as well back then and I’m sure I wasn’t the only one though I drew the line at investing in a dragon suit!
There was an air of supreme confidence amongst the Zep camp that afternoon – their delight in scooping so many awards in those post punk days could be clearly seen. It really did feel like ‘The 1980’s Part One’ was ready to usher in a new exciting era for us all. The photo here with John Paul Jones inspires a host of memories from that early era of the TBL magazine.

It was 45 years ago today…
45 years ago today, Tuesday November 26 1974, the four members of Led Zeppelin re- convened to begin rehearsals for their forthcoming US tour. The location was Liveware Theatre in Ealing. Journalist Nick Kent met them there to interview Jimmy for a major feature in the NME that ran in the December 7 issue.
Nick reported that the following numbers were rehearsed that afternoon. In My Time Of Dying, Sick Again, Custard Pie (all from their forthcoming double album Physical Graffiti), When The Levee Breaks plus covers of Don’t Be Cruel and Hound Dog. Subsequently Custard Pie was never performed live by the group.
Photographer Pennie Smith was on hand to take this photo of them. I remember reading the NME feature with some awe and gazing at this very atmospheric pic. After a long layoff they were about to be Led Zeppelin again. That prospect all of 45 years ago, was an awesome one for this then 18 year old fan..

Gene Clark – No Other (4AD Records):
Great American Music …lost and found…and found again…
I first read about Gene Clark’s 1974 album No Other on a train travelling from Milton Keynes to Watford. It was early February 2002 and I was bound for the Watford Town Hall to see a performance by The Who – a warm up for their Teenage charity show at the Royal Albert Hall. I would be at the esteemed venue for what was rather bizzare night on the evening of February 9. This was the occasion Robert Plant and his band Strange Sensation played a support slot to headliner Paul Weller Weller’s set included a cameo appearance by Jimmy Page who performed an instrumental version of Dazed And Confused. A beguiling evening.
Back to the story. So there I was on the train reading a book titled Unknown Pleasures- Great Lost Albums Rediscovered. Albums came under the spotlight by Neil Young, Fleetwood Mac, ABC, The Specials and Led Zeppelin (Presence) and a fair few others. One that caught my eye was No Other by Gene Clark. The review by one David Bennun was itself told from the angle of a train ride. David’s experience of discovering this album on a cassette he had playing on his Sony Walkman on a slow early morning train trek to Brighton.
David Bennun’s unabashed enthusiasm for this record made me search it on my return from The Who gig (a splendid night I might add).

The original album on Asylum was long deleted. I eventually obtained a copy on CD – a remastered version with bonus tracks.
I was aware of Gene Clark’s role in The Byrds but not his solo output. I was more than impressed. His solo credentials included having two compositions on the phenomenally successful Robert Plant & Alison Kraus Raising Sand album. They mined Gene’s Dillard & Clark collaboration Through the Morning, Through the Night to cover the title track and Polly Come Home.
No Other has gone on to become a lost classic. One of those albums that has seeped through on the reputation of reviews such as the above. It’s now about to much deserved wider acclaim.
To celebrate what would have been his 75th birthday and the 45th anniversary of it’s original release, No Other has recently been reissued in a multitude of formats via 4AD the re-mastered album on CD and LP, and also in a lavish box-set containing a myriad of alternate mixes and bonus tracks, a documentary film and extensive liner notes and essays.
My attraction is the LP vinyl album newly remastered at Abbey Road Studios as I have never sourced the original. It’s a brand new 180 gm LP pressing full of warmth and resonance.
Recorded at the Village Recorder in West Hollywood and produced by Thomas Jefferson Kaye, No Other was originally released in 1974 on Asylum Records, just a year after The Byrds short-lived reunion. Given little promotion at the time (Label boss David Geffen hated it as there were no potential hits to be found), No Other was a commercial failure and was subsequently deleted shortly after. Lost classic status ensured…
It opens with the fabulous Life’s Greatest Fool – a searing onslaught of country soul dominated by some uplifting slide guitar. Backing vocalists with the calibre of Clydie King, Ventta Fields and Claudia Lennear provide a glorious gospel like vocal support.
Silver Raven benefits from the contribution of then well in demand session guitarist Jesse Ed Davis. Instrumentally, the title track emerges as a lost Isaac Hayes film soundtrack with it’s upfront percussion, Fender Rhodes keyboards and funk wah wah. Strength Of Strings with it’s multi voiced harmonies and scat singing recalls the mysterious beauty of David Crosby’s If I Could Only Remember My Name album.
Over on Side Two, From A Silver Phial is a lilting piano led affair with pleasing wah wah and Al Kooper like organ.
Some Misunderstanding carries a similar reflective on the road stance to that of The Rolling Stones Memory Motel off the Black And Blue album. Equally epic and eight minutes in length with soaring slide guitar and Hammond organ. The True One is a more simple country lament that reminded me of the Only Sound That Matters from the Band Of Joy album. Lady Of The North is a plaintive tale with violin accompaniment and is a suitably wistful ending to proceedings.
Listening to No Other afresh on LP record these past few days has perfectly captured the melancholic mood that has hung around these parts these past few weeks. On Life’s Greatest Fool, when Gene Clark sings the line ”Do you believe deep in your soul that too much loneliness makes you grow old” I completely get that. Let me add that I won’t be the only one aware that a sense of loneliness can creep up on you even when you are in a crowd.
I also completely get exactly what Robert Plant was aiming for on the Raising Sand album with Alison Krauss and The Band Of Joy album with Buddy Miller, Patty Griffin and co. He wanted to make great American music in the grand tradition of No Other.
Making great American music was something that Gene Clark did with utter conviction. I am very glad I re- connected with this lost classic again and it will be a repeated warm pleasure in the winter months ahead.

DL Diary Blog Update:
Friday treats at the Vinyl Barn – at the always excellent Vinyl Barn last Friday morning , after a difficult week for the club , I was well pleased to find copies of two of the greatest singles ever made – namely the Tottenham Hotspur F A Cup Final Squad records for season 1980/1981and 1981/1982 – when of course they triumphed in the final both times.
Lyrically, the 1980/81 single Ossie’s Dream (Spurs are on their way to Wembley) is surely right up there with the likes of Dylan’s Like A Rolling Stone, The Beatles Yesterday and Elton’s Your Song.
I will be reveling in these former glories and of course, I look forward to further Tottenham Hotspur Squad singles celebrating future success under the astute and special management of one Jose Mourinho. Come on you Spurs!

Last weeky at the always excellent Slide Record shop in Bedford, I was well pleased to find the recently re issued remastered 180g LP pressing of ex Byrds singer songwriter the late Gene Clark’s lost 1974 classic No Other.
As mentioned above, I’ve long been an admirer of this album. Gene’s solo credentials included having two compositions on the phenomenally successful Robert Plant & Alison Kraus Raising Sand album. They mined Gene’s Dillard & Clark collaboration Through the Morning, Through the Night to cover the title track and Polly Come Home.
Now released on various formats, Gene Clark’s No Other will no doubt enjoy deserved wider acclaim. It’s great to have it on this newly remastered edition with the original sleeve artwork. As can be seen above, it has been a very rewarding experience re-connecting with this gem.
Football Update: A fine start to the new era – a 3-2 Sours win at West Ham was just the tonic – though it all looked a bit shaky towards the end. it’s all leading to the mid week encounter on December 4 at Man Utd. That will be some game given Jose’s past experience at Old Trafford. Come on you Spurs!

Thanks Dave…but you says February 1992 about WHO gig, I suppose was February 2002. Also nice your vintage shopping about Tottenham Hotspur F A Cup Final Squad records for season 1980/1981 and 1981/1982 – when of course they triumphed in the final both times. 1981 defeat Manchester City and 1982 defeat of QPR after a replay (QPR my team) !
