Bert Inspired: A Concert For Bert Jansch:

Plenty of coverage for the two Robert Plant /Sensational Space Shifters appearances in Glasgow for the Bert Inspired tribute concerts – this review via The Independent:

“What a fantastic combination of music, songs and attitude,” reflected Robert Plant at this first of two evenings at the Celtic Connections festival to pay tribute to the late Glasgow-born, Edinburgh-raised folk-rock guitarist Bert Jansch, five years gone this summer. In Plant’s wistful satisfaction lay both the appeal of Jansch’s output and of this group concert, a model of starry proficiency.

Jansch’s music stood up to Bernard Butler’s technical fluency while his recording partner Ben Watt sang the softly reflective ‘Morning Brings Peace of Mind’ and the sinister, bluesy ‘Soho’; his resonant and immediate songs surfed on both the pop instincts of Blur’s Graham Coxon (his expressively English singing accent lent ‘One For Jo’ the air of Nick Drake) and the rootsy sensuality of Karine Polwart on ‘Fresh as a Sweet Sunday Morning’; and his attitude was scattered throughout, not least on Ryley Walker’s playful ‘Build Another Band’ and a pre-recorded clip of Neil Young laying down a gravelly ‘Needle of Death’ in Jack White’s Third Man studio.

The presence and piercingly affecting voice of Jansch’s old Pentangle accomplice Jacqui McShee lent gravity, just as Plant and his full band brought star quality. His mesmerising, epic takes on Jansch’s ‘Go Your Way My Love’ and ‘Poison’ gave way to elemental shared influences like the standards ‘Satan, Your Kingdom Must Come Down’ and – as popularised by Plant’s old band Led Zeppelin – ‘Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You’.

Led Zeppelin Preston Guild Hall 1973:

This one via the Lancashire Evening Post…

When Led Zeppelin announced in late 1972 they were embarking on their biggest UK tour to date it sparked a huge scramble for tickets.

All 110,000 tickets sold out within just four hours of box offices simultaneously putting £1 tickets on sale for the 25 dates.

Here’s a bit of TBL retro from this week in 1975…

Snapshot Listen:- How it sounded this week:

I have this on the 1975 World Tour vinyl double album and the When The Levee breaks /World Tour ’75 CD set. I’ve always had a bit of affection for the World Tour bootleg – it was one of the fist I got of the 1975 US tour. It’s a fair to good audience recording but very lively.

This is an enjoyable performance though Robert’s voice is still struggling. Sick Again really rocks while Over The Hills appears in a unique arrangement as Page’s guitar lead cuts out and Plant fills in as JPJ carries the rhythm. After ”The Rain Song, Robert lectures the crowd on the Mellotron: “It’s a very peculiar instrument because every time we take it somewhere, it goes out of tune. It’s built and comprises of tapes inside the box, and to simulate violins is not an easy job when you’re travelling to North America. In fact, we’re gonna try to simulate some Eastern violins now.” Kashmir is growing more powerful with each performance and is rapidly turning into one of the highlights of the show. No Quarter clocks in at 19 minutes and pleasingly so.

Moby Dick is now stretching to 25 minutes and Plant refers to Bonzo as “Karen Carpenter”, a reference to a recent poll in Playboy magazine which placed Karen Carpenter as ‘Best Drummer’, above Bonzo. At the time Bonzo’s first hand response was captured in an interview with Lisa Robinson: “Karen Carpenter couldn’t last ten fucking minutes with a Zeppelin number!”

Dazed And Confused (only its third outing on the tour) includes a very delicate version of San Francisco and is now recapturing some of its former glories. Page’s solo on Stairway To Heaven is also developing a previously unknown intricacy. Instead of Communication Breakdown they throw in a ragged but welcomed version of Heartbreaker as a second encore.

“Montreal – you are the best! Maybe the snow has melted all around the hall.” is Plant’s parting comment.

They were on the up, and there were some great performances imminently ahead.

To be continued…

Terry Wogan 1938 – 2016:

Another one…and in the UK this passing really resonates…

Sir Terry Wogan…I can remember coming home from school listening to his afternoon Radio One afternoon show in the early 70’s, there was 1980s BBC early evening chat show ( the drunk George Best appearance never ruffled him) the Radio Two breakfast show – his signing off when he left in 2009 was one of the most moving broadcasts moments I’ve ever heard. Part of the fabric of British life… sadly passed away aged 77.

Sir Terry Wogan – thank you for being our friend…RIP …

Paul Kantner 1941 – 2016:

And another rock’n’roll passing – Paul Kantner -founding member of Jefferson Airplane has passed away aged 74. Alongside David Crosby and Stephen Stills, Paul co wrote the utterly beautiful Wooden Ships one of my all time favourite songs.

Dave Lewis Blog Diary Update:

chris c retirement 2

Friday morning vinyl treats at the Vinyl Barn last week – if I don’t buy anything this week it may well be that nobody in the rock world has passed on – as once again it felt wrong to leave this Grace Slick/Paul Kantner 1974 Jefferson Starship album Dragonfly in the racks.

Chris Charlesworth’s retirement leaving party on Friday at the Omnibus Press office in London turned into something of an author summit and I found myself in some very exalted company – namely legendary Beatles author Mark Lewishon, The Who/Faces author Andy Neill and John Rogan much acclaimed for his biographys on The Bryds, The Smiths and Ray Davies to name but three. The four of us got into some highly enjoyable rock author debate and unsurprisingly we were the last to leave. Andy has his excellent Faces biography out in paperback now, Johnny is working on a Byrds book update and Mark is busy collating the second volume of his exhaustive The Beatles All These Years trilogy. Above pic with Andy, Mark and Chris C.

Far from retiring fully, Chris will be working from home as a consultant to Omnibus Press and I am pleased to announce he will be editing the in progress Evenings With Led Zeppelin book project I am working on in collaboration with Mike Tremaglio.

victoria fair january 30

On Saturday we had a great day at the VIP Victoria Record Fair – and unsurprisingly there were one or two additions to the DL collection were made amongst the these racks..

Amongst them:

bowie chameleon
David Bowie Chameleon –TV advertised 1979 compilation from Australia – love the cover art on this one…

On the player the Phil Collins Face Value reissue – I got this last week – A fabulous album – no guilty pleasure here from the often maligned Mr C.

When Face Value was first released In the post Zep split era in early 1981, the songs on this album – with themes of rejection, loss reflection were right in tune with my state of mind at the time.

On his early solo albums, Phil Collins always brought a Beatlesque musicality to the table and he also tapped in to soul, funk and R and B influences as can be heard on the likes of I Missed Again, Behind The Lines, Thunder and Lightning etc. A great album then – a great album now.

It was a pleasure to view the YouTube clips of Robert’s Concert For Bert appearances. I would loved to have been there but logistically I could not carry that one off and I have too much going on here right now. I’ve not been feeling 100% for a few days and need to get back on form to crack on with the current workload I have.

After what has been a difficult January for reasons we all share – thank goodness it’s February because as the mantra goes…

’’January is a 31 day hangover but February brings lambs, daffodils and the air fills with a magical quickening that tells you spring is on the way. February is short so whatever you’re trying to stretch, whether it’s your salary, your calorie intake or your booze units, February’s unique compactness helps you spread it just that little bit thicker. A good enough reason to raise a glass”.

I’ll certainly drink to that…

The old Fruitmarket was a superb venue with echoes of days gone by at the market – first time for me and I hope its not the last. The tributes for Bert were really enjoyable and I loved the video clip of Neil Young v. much.

My enjoyment leapt to a much higher level – as soon as Robert walked on stage! He was fabulous and his voice is sublime – always. I absolutely love Sensational Space Shifters and they are pure joy and happiness. On a rainy Glasgow night I couldn’t think of anything better than this. Brilliant.

Thanks for posting the video clips. Much better than the snippets I attempted to take.

Yes Dave so sad about Terry Wogan. I was a huge fan of his warm vice and jaunty banter. Love his Janet and John stories – hilarious !

Have a good weekend TBL x
