TBL Celebrates Houses Of The Holy at 40:

A lot of work went into collating and writing the Houses Of The Holy feature earlier in the year – I was as usual spinning a few other plates, so it’s most gratifying to receive the kind of feedback below that makes it all worthwhile…inspiring a return to the music with a fresh perspective is always my mission on everything that comes out of here…judging by these comments it’s job done with Houses…

This one from Paul Humbley:

This is the least played Zeppelin vinyl in my collection, but having read Dave’s fascinating appraisal of this album it will be returning on a regular basis from now on.

One of my favourite Zeppelin tracks is on this album ‘The Rain Song’ a slow, atmospheric track which is not your typical Zeppelin song and has been a longterm favourite. ‘Over The Hills And Far Away’, ‘D’yer Mak’er’ and ‘No Quarter’ all great stuff.

Thanks Dave for pointing me back to this album, through such a great article. I have been with Record Collector magazine from the beginning, I have 34 years of copies filed away in the cellar, but I always look forward to your articles. You have set your self a high benchmark with features on The Who, Nick Drake, Rod Stewart and this Zeppelin feature to mark this albums 40th birthday today is no exception.

and this from Michael Rae in Melbourne:

Congrats on the great article in Record Collector, Dave. By the joys of the internet, I’ve been able to buy an electronic copy with the RC app. Much better than waiting for nigh unto the 41st anniversary for the hard copy mag  to reach Australia’s shores! I have closed my office. cranked up the stereo and really enjoyed reading your fine work while listening to HOTH. I look forward to reading more on the TBL website over the long weekend. Cheers, Michael

The Record Collector issue with the Houses Of The Holy feature is out now…be sure to seek it out…more details here:

Jimmy Page at Foals gig:

Here’s a neat one – Jimmy Page was at the Royal Albert Hall Foals gig on Friday night -I have this on good authority as my daughter Sam was at the gig sat not far from him -Sam reports he was well into it!

Robert and the Sensational Space Shifters Down Under:

This report from Bill McGlynn:

Just returned from the Plant and Space Shifters show in Sydney. As a life-long fan, I was more than impressed! Highlights were ‘What is & What Should Never Be  and Going To California. What is replaced Ramble On, from previous setlists on this tour. It started with Tin Pan and Heartbreaker was later.
He certainly more than still has IT, in voice and stage presence!
He looked (from the back stalls) and moved like 20+ years younger than his age.
The crowd response was warm to begin with and was hot by the end. Thousands on their feet for the final numbers. Bron-Yr-Stomp and Rock And Roll.
They are such a well balanced act, especially with Juldeh getting involved.
Not many in the audience below 40 years of age.
Robert was generous with the between song talk and this further stoked the crowd. I liked the intro before What is.. about jazz in the key of E!
I will be seeing Robert two times more this weekend and from the front row (Byron Bay and Newcastle).

Here’s Robert in jovial mood here in Adelaide – he is such an old devil with words…

DL Diary Update:

Pulled out the Houses Of The Holy LP on Thursday  and it sounded sensational –  simple as that …as fresh and vital as it did 40 years back. Caught up on a bit of vinyl listening yesterday including the excellent Crosby Stills & Nash Live in LA double album…I’m also eagerly looking forward to soaking up the new Stephen Stills Carry On box set…I also need to get to the Studio Magik box set which is also in the pending to play pile…

Mark H has been in touch to  inform me he is attending the Joe Bonamassa  Royal Albert Hall tonight – have a great night Mr Mark Harrison, Dawn Atherton, Paul Harper and Cliff the ticket man and Tracey…

Can’t really believe that as I write this, there’s a little bit of snow falling outside – like everyone here, I am hoping this cold weather will soon improve.

In between visiting Bet and other stuff and work on the Knebworth revised book project, the good lady Janet and I will be celebrating our 29th wedding anniversary over this Easter weekend – 29 years blimey! As I always say, to quote the singer at Earls Court…it’s been a lifetime (in a very good way I might add!) but a second…

…………..

Hipgnosis Karma 1: Given its history as the location for the Hipgnosis designed Pink Floyd Animals sleeve ,it was somewhat fitting that I passed this landmark building as I walked to meet Aubrey Powell on Thursday….

Hipgnosis Karma 2: On the way back from interviewing Aubrey Powell I made a  quick visit to JB’s record shop and lo and behold found this copy of The Nice Five Bridges LP for a mere £1 –and yes the sleeve is designed by Hipgnosis -it was all meant to be! The sleeve was also printed by the old EJ Day company who had a factory here in Bedford in the 1970s.

Have to say meeting Po was a huge thrill it’s amazing to think back to that day in 1973 – as a 17 year old eagerly snapping up the album and gazing at the sleeve, I could never have envisaged that 40 years on I’d be interviewing the co-designer of the iconic cover…

The Aubrey Powell interview is one of the many highlights (more news of which to follow) of the forthcoming TBL magazine issue 35 due late spring which kick starts the TBL 2013 subscription.  Have to say the take up of 2013 subscriptions has been somewhat slow to date. So if you are a 2012 subscriber your subscription ended with issue 34 and you need to re-subscribe for the next 3 issues.

Of course if you have invested in a single issue recently which a fair few have – subscribing is the easy way to make sure you never miss an issue -it would be great t have you on board.
