TBL Issue 42 – Out On The Streets…

TBL 42 mail out update: I counted them all in and I counted them all out…TBL 42 is out on the streets –  as of Wednesday , every subscriber copy and pre order was in transit. The pic  shows the scene at the main Bedford Royal Mail sorting office as the good lady Janet and I dropped the bulk of them off on Saturday afternoon.

TBL 42 is on the way to over 30 counties including England, Scotland, Wales, Republic of Ireland , Ireland, Germany, Italy, Austria, Switzerland, Sweden, Denmark, Finland, Norway, Poland, France, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg Portugal, Spain, Russia, Malta, Indonesia, Taiwan, Israel, Ecuador, China, Japan, Brazil, Argentina, Australia, New Zealand, , USA and Canada.

“Tight But Loose” Issue 42

What a great start to 2017: the release of issue number 42 of the Tight But Loose magazine. And, yet again, another great issue from Dave Lewis, packed full of interesting articles and photos. And superbly printed on extremely high quality glossy paper. This issue opens with coverage of the Stairway To Heaven court case (or should that be farce case) in Los Angeles, with the great news that it was thrown out of court.Coverage is also given of the latest news from John Paul Jones and Robert Plant, as they continue to achieve so much musically. As a Real Ale fan it is great to see a synopsis of an article that appeared in the Sunday Times about Robert’s son Logan, who runs Beavertown Brewery.This is followed by a fantastic discovery, photographs of the band during their soundcheck for the first concert in Australia in Perth, taken by Nick Shaw, a tremendous find.

Not surprisingly, a big chunk of this issue of TBL covers the BBC Sessions reissue. Dave of course wrote the liner notes that are in the book that accompanies the “super deluxe” version, and he discusses what he contributed to the project. We also can read an article by a fan who recorded the 1971 Paris Theatre BBC broadcast, and amazingly there are photos of the actual radio and Grundig reel to reel tape recorder that were used. Richard Grubb then dissects the audio of all the broadcasts and compares them to the original 1997 release. Dave then gives us in great detail how he restarted the TBL magazine in 1992, A great year, as it was also the time when Dave and Andy Adams organised the Led Zeppelin UK Convention “Celebration Days”. I went to this, and spent a lot of money too! Very happy memories as it allowed me to meet for the first time people like Dave, Andy, and Luis Rey, plus many other fans, and we have been friends ever since. Led Zeppelin has this great ability to bring people together and create enduring friendships, which is truly wonderful.After this the founder of the original TBL website Dave Linwood (including a photo of him grinning like a Cheshire Cat!) gives an account of how he started the website. This website was a direct spin-off from that website, so the story continues.

Cliff Hilliard, a man who is trying to collect every session that Jimmy Page played on, has a superb and beautifully illustrated and laid out 2 page article on a selection of 45 singles. This project is a fantastic one, and every fan and admirer of Jimmy Page’s vast catalogue of work should commend Cliff for this incredible project. He asks that all TBL readers help him with any information to give details of each session. When completed I am sure that the great man himself will be very impressed, as it will form a complete and permanent record of the vast number of sessions that he played in up to the founding Led Zeppelin in 1968. Following this are articles about the 100 most collectable Led Zeppelin albums, and then there is a feature about The Song Remains The Same’s more unusual pressings.

Paul Sheppard completes his look at the Tarantura CD label, covering the more recent releases from 2000 onwards. This is very nicely illustrated with cover art from many of these beautiful releases. The layout and artwork of this issue is really superb, a tribute to all the hard work that Dave has put in with his designer Mick Lowe. It adds up to a very professional and very high quality production. The magazine ends with a review and an interview with the author, Martin Power, of his excellent biography of Jimmy: “No Quarter The Three Lives Of Jimmy Page”, published by Omnibus Press. This is an excellent book and a must read for all fans. Finally another Led Zeppelin book author, the distinguished writer and commentator Marc Roberty, discusses his “Led Zeppelin: Day By Day” book. Once again, essential reading from a man who really knows what he is talking about.

There are two versions of TBL issue 42. The standard on with a photo of Robert Plant on the cover. And also a special limited alternate cover, with a tremendous photo of Jimmy Page (from the RAH in 1969). This is limited to 300 copies, individually numbered and signed by Dave Lewis. I have this version and I can highly recommend getting it, in addition to the one with Plant on the cover. You know it makes sense!

• Jimmy Page visited the gallery of photographer Richard Young at 4 Holland Street in London. Young has previously photographed Page, and 4 Holland Street is where Jimmy Page’s Equinox bookshop was located in the seventies. You can see another photo of Page’s visit to the gallery here.

• Robert Plant performed three surprise shows in a small pub near his home. Plant performed at The Swan in Stourport three times in December. Here’s a breakdown of the shows:

December 17 — Stourport
Robert Plant performed with Deborah Bonham.

December 27 — Stourport
Robert Plant performed with the band Kick The Fridge. Band member Rob Tennant said they performed “Beatles classics.”

December 31 — Stourport
Robert Plant joined a band on stage on New Year’s Eve. Here’s an album of photos from the show. Here’s a video of Plant performing “For What It’s Worth.” Here’s Plant talking on stage. And here’s a video of Plant in the pub.

• The Terrence Malik film featuring Robert Plant has been renamed “Song To Song” and will premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas on March 10. That’s followed by its US release on March 17.

Peter Sarstedt – 1941 – 2017:

It was very sad to hear the passing of singer songwriter Peter Sarstedt – he scored a worldwide hit and UK number one with the superb Where Do You Go To My Lovely? in 1969 – the follow up the excellent Frozen Orange Juice reached number 10.

Where Do You Go To My Lovely? has a vivid recent memory for me as at my 60th birthday celebration gathering at the White Horse on September 5 last year, at the end of the evening as musician Mat Roberts and band began packing away, another local musician Paul Carriontion picked up an acoustic guitar for a spontaneous rendition of the song.
It was an absolutely magic moment as we all stood around joining in. Whenever I hear Where Do You Go To My Lovely? it’s a poignant reminder of that epic evening. RIP Peter Sarstedt…

David Bowie – One Year Gone: 

Tuesday, January 10 marked the one year anniversary of the passing of David Bowie. Of all of last year’s sad passing’s, it’s David Bowie that has resonated most with me – profoundly so. That sad day of one year ago was one of the most monumental I have know – with so much shock, grief and outpouring of love for the man.

The good lady Janet’s subsequent visit to Brixton and Hedden Street on Saturday January 14 2016 was incredibly moving.

David has of course been paramount in our thoughts these past few days -with the airing of the superb The Last Five Years BBC2 documentary last Saturday, his 70th birthday on Sunday and Tuesday’s one year anniversary.

He really is still missed so much – his music has never sounded better and playing through the likes of Hunky Dory, Young Americans, Low etc has brought great listening joy and comfort.

He was incredible, he is incredible and while so much has gone – so much remains…

DL Dairy Blog Update:

Friday treats at the Vinyl Barn – the year officially got under way last Friday morning with the first vinyl purchasers of 2017 from the Vinyl Barn…and a lovely crop including The Beatles White Album original Apple mono pressing, the 1971 Homer film soundtrack that features Led Zep’s How Many More Times on UK Atlantic orange and plum label, Joni Mitchell Shadows And Light 1979 live album and Early John Empty Sky on original UK DJM .Thanks Darren Harte!

On Saturday I went to the local  Jubilee Park near where I grew up, to see Adam play for Bedford Albion before he went back to UNI – he played on the same pitch I played on a few times circa 1976-1981 for the Wallbangers FC (as did Phil Harris Dec Hickey Geoff Klein Dave Bunting Colin Alder Tom Locke Max Harris and James Eaton. They lost 4-1 in a cup game with Europa –the scoreline flattered the winners a bit – Adam is lurking on the edge of the area in the main pic waiting for a chance. He played well and I think he would have made it into the Wallbangers team on this form! On the subject of football, it was very pleasing to see Tottenham overcome Chelsea 2-0 in the recent top of the table meeting – here’s hoping they can maintain that form.

The opening days of 2017 have been dominated here by the TBL 42 mail out and like I said last week, I had forgotten quite what a task it is to label, stamp and pack each order. It’s a great relief it’s now out on the streets. The initial reaction has been very encouraging and makes all the effort I put into it worthwhile.

Elsewhere, we have been speaking to Sam from Sydney  where she has been settling in with her job out there, and Adam has finally gone back to UNI. With the TBL 42 mail out completed it’s now down to catching up on emails and a fair few other things that got backlogged and planning the TBL initiatives ahead. That will include more promo work on TBL 42, collating material for the next issue and work on the Evenings With book project with Mike Tremaglio. 2017 is well and truly up and running.

On Monday, it was a joy to celebrate Jimmy’s birthday with plenty of his music on the player – including the epic Zep Royal Albert Hall January 9 1970 show. The Yardbirds Little Games, Death Wish II soundtrack, some early session stuff, the Coverdale Page album and more.

Playlist wise I am also catching up on a stack of stuff including the David Bowie Who Can I Be Now box set, Bob Dylan The Real Albert Hall 1966 plus  The Rolling Stones Mono box set I also intend to pick up on a few things that got missed late last year including the new David Crosby album.

There’s a trip to the dentist to endure on Friday after the Vinyl Barn visit -following my crown falling out a few weeks back a filling or two is required. I am a little worried that date is Friday the 13th…I need to be brave!
