Following Wednesday’s remarkable sale in aid of the ABC Trust, of the Martin D28 acoustic guitar Jimmy Page donated to the Bonhams Entertainment/Memorabilia auction, Tiffany Garside CEO of the ABC Trust has been in touch to offer her reaction on behalf of the charity .

In Santa Barbara on Friday night, Robert Plant introduced his new band as The Sensational “Soft Rock” Space Shifters. He was being facetious. The amplifiers on stage had just finished gusting the gale force 10 guitar riff of “Tin Pan Valley” over the capacity crowd.

Behold the unexpected return of Robert Plant the rocker.

During his career, Plant has pulled off more unpredictable moves than Gary Kasparov. In recent years, Plant has dwelled on pastoral American music, first with Alison Krauss and then his own alt.country group, Band of Joy. (In the middle of all that, he also reunited with Led Zeppelin for a one-off show.) Now, Plant has reunited with the musicians who worked on the 2005 rock album Mighty Rearranger. “I really just missed the wolf in me,” Plant explained in a recent interview with The Sydney Morning Herald. Indeed, Plant did a whole lotta howling at the Santa Barbara Bowl.

The singer was in expansive voice right from the opener, “Babe, I’m Gonna Leave You.” This version of the Joan Baez song, popularized by Led Zeppelin, started with guitarist Liam “Skin” Tyson playing semi-Flamenco improvisations before easing into the familiar Jimmy Page guitar figure. The Sensational Space Shifters took the song from simmer to a boil. Plant, dressed in a black button down with rolled-up sleeve cuffs, used his microphone stand as a fulcrum point from which to swivel and pivot, dip and sway. At 64, Plant still has moves that make him a commanding frontman. And when the singer let out a long wail—as he frequently did throughout the show—you could feel it vortex through music like a squalling weather system, upping the intensity.

Plant’s choice of opening number assuaged those in the crowd hoping for a comforting fix of Led Zeppelin. It bought him a bit of capital with which to steer the show in a more adventurous course. The Sensational Space Shifters, essentially the same group of British musicians who constituted Plant’s earlier group The Strange Sensation, sound nothing like a classic rock nostalgia act. That much was immediately apparent on “Tin Pan Valley,” which sounds like collision between Portishead and Queens of the Stone Age. The rock song includes a lyric that, one imagines, is a mission statement for Plant: “My peers may flirt with cabaret/some fake the rebel yell/I’m moving up to higher ground/I must escape this hell.”

DL Diary Update:

It’s been another week of full on work on the Knebworth book with more to come.

Of course there was some respite on Saturday as we gathered to watch the TV coverage of The Rolling Stones at Glastonbury…we had a bit of Stones party here on the night – as the Stones hit top gear we were dancing around our living room like mere teenagers …it may only be rock’n’roll but boy did we like it along with the thousands that were there..

Overall opinions have been somewhat divided as to the merit of their performance….now the dust has settled, here’s some DL thoughts:

Overall the set list was a very good one –the opening salvo of Jumpin’ Jack Flash, It’s Only Rock’n’Roll into Paint It Black was a veritable hit filled juke box. Revamping 1968’s Beggars Banquet track Factory Girl as Glastonbury Girl was a quint touch – there were a few indulgent moments notably You Got The Silver a lesser known Keef solo from the Let It Bleed album and though I personally enjoyed it, 2000 Light Years From Home went over a fair few heads. For the record, if they wanted to plunder the darkest reaches of their catalogue, I’d have welcomed them having a stab at Child Of The Moon  the B side of the aforementioned Jumpin’ Jack Flash

The home straight with the likes of Tumbling Dice, Start Me Up,Sympathy For The Devil  and Satisfaction as seen on the TV coverage, was right on the money. Individually Keith Richard did seem oddly muted letting Ronnie take the spotlight and a very fine job he did too. Mick Taylor made a steller contribution to Midnight Rambler only enhancing his reputation as a key ingredient to that classic run of albums circa 1969 to 1974. Charlie was good tonight but then he’s been good tonight for the last 50 years.

As for Michael Philip Jagger…what can you say? 26 days short of his 70th birthday, he danced, pranced and preened at a level of intensity that was quite breathtaking to watch. He also sang very well, something as my good friend Terry has noted, that has not been so apparent on other 50 years and counting gigs.

So it was a yes from me all round. Fundamentally, The Rolling Stones looked,  acted and sounded like a proper rock’n’roll band….and when they do that… satisfaction is always guaranteed.

The Stones aura will be hanging around here for a while as in amongst everything else, I am currently researching and writing a feature on one of their lesser acclaimed works which is ripe for re assessment. More on that ahead.

It was also good to nip in to London Monday evening to attend the launch of the Bonham’s sale. As can be seen by the pics on the site and Facebook, there was an array of memorabilia to be seen ranging from the hand written lyrics to David Bowie’s The Jean Genie, to rare James Bond film posters and of course as we reported, the Zeppelin related lots which all raised a very pretty penny indeed.

On the playlist, Zep wise it’s been In Through The Out Door in keeping with the Knebworth research and Robert’s Picture At Eleven. Also caught up with the Mighty Baby vinyl reissues I got a few weeks back and whislt we are on the subject of the seminal psych rockers, may I draw your attention to the magazine/book Flashback – edited by Richard Morton Jack.

It’s a splendid compendium of retro features on psych, prog, jazz, folk, blues from the 1960s and 70s with great reproductions of original reviews and ads etc. Class stuff all round – check it out at this link:

With good weather ahead (at least for the next few days!) , it’s the perfect opportunity to be seen in the coolest T –shirt around – you got it …the new TBL T-shirt.
