John Paul Jones made a surprise appearance at the Punkt Festival in Kristiansand, in the south of Norway on Saturday September 4th. John performed a solo piece that was a commissioned work for “Nearly Ninety” – formulated for the choreographer Merce Cunningham’s 90th birthday. He then remained on stage to be joined by Norwegian avant-garde/electro acoustic group Supersilent.

With the Them Crooked Vultures members now returning back to their day jobs , John Paul Jones first post TCV appearance found him in Spain at the African Express concert held in A Coruña, Galiza, NW Spain over the weekend. Reports are sparse but I can confirm that John appeared playing bass on Elíades Ochoa’s version of “Chan Chan.” Mariam improvised and everyone enhanced the haunting Cuban masterpiece. Them Crooked Vultures took what may, or may not be their last UK bow last night at a triumphant finale at London’s Brixton 02 Academy. As Josh Homme noted, it brought the band full circle as it was here last August that the Vultures first announced themselves at a low key support slot to the Arctic Monkeys.

Next Monday July 5th,Them Crooked Vultures play their final UK date of their tour – a benefit show which is in aid of TCV friend and Josh Homme collaborator Brian O’Connor at the Brixton 02 Academy. The TBL pre gig meet will be at the The Bee Hive Pub in Brixton (see link). Just a 100 metres from the tube station, you can’t miss it.
