JPJ/BORDERS/TBL 25 FOR CHRISTMAS/DEC 4th

John Paul Jones in Borders Oxford Street  April 12th 2002 holding up an essential  magazine
Pretty hectic right now what with TBL 25 to wrap and proof, plus lots of news incoming with Jimmy in Rio, the It Might Get Loud UK screening details and premiere, Robert in the Delta and TCV out and very much about.

In between his hectic schedule, John Paul Jones very kindly made some time on Tuesday to conduct an interview on the phone with me for the new TBL magazine. He was on great form and …

NINE-ONE / FLOODS / CODA / FOOTBALL(AGAIN) / FATHER CHRISTMAS?

November 22nd is a date that is already famous in the annals of history being the day in 1963 that President John F Kennedy was assassinated.
Forty six years on November 22nd will also go down as the date of another assassination – a sporting one.
Oh yes poor Wigan Athletic. Shot down by Defoe, Lennon, Crouch and co as the mighty Tottenham Hotspur ran rampant at White Hart Lane. So where were you as the goals rained in on a Sunday afternoon? Me and the boy Adam were just back from …

WEMBLEY ’79/LED JEDWARD ’09/WEMBLEY ’71

I’ve never been much good at taking photos as the one above confirms. It may not be in with a shout of greatest sports pic in the world ever, but it’s a genuine all action reminder of a memorable afternoon thirty years ago
My old trusty Olympus trip just about captured the moment R. Plant rounded the advancing goalkeeper Martin Day (sorry West Ham fans!) to net a rather fine goal in his teams 3-1 win over LBC Radio.  The occasion was the Annual Sun/Goaldiggers five a side football tournament at …

Tribute Bands/Bikes (again)/NME/Vultures

Ten years ago this weekend along with  my good friends Tom and Gary (and Terry and Kam), I watched England triumph over Scotland 2-0 on Saturday afternoon (sorry Billy!) Then we all ventured to Birmingham in a mini bus driven by the Foy boy to witness Robert and the Priory Of Brion performing in the lounge bar of the Kings Heath Red Lion pub.
Ten years on history is repeating itself sort of, as later today we will soak up a bit of the England v Brazil friendly then venture out …

Tents / Priory / Jacko / Local Press / Friends

Ten years ago on the afternoon October 31st 1999, I found myself travelling in a taxi across the Leicestershire countryside seemingly lost. This was not a good situation as the prospect of seeing Robert Plant, who was performing in a tent in the vicinity in the next half hour was fast disappearing.
Earlier I had met the enigmatic and fine Leicester based musician Kevin Hewick who was leading me with all good intentions on this wild goose chase.(Hi Kevin hope you’re well). He had heard that Robert and The Priory …

Stamps / Photos / Playlists / Song Remains

Very nice to see the Led Zeppelin 4 album artwork will be a part of the ten British classic album cover designs to be featured on a set of Royal Mail stamps launched on January 7th next year. Used to be a bit of a stamp collector way back in my youth, and I did indulge in The Beatles commemorative album art work stamps that were issued a couple of years back. The latter came in a superb presentation set and I’m sure the Classic Album Designs will be similarly …

Unledded 15 years ago / Howard / Bikes / Cars / Books / 1975

October 17 is a date I remember well because I have an old T-shirt tucked away emblazoned with that date and nothing else. It’s a remnant from the old record company promotional era when all manner of goods were distributed to generate publicity. In this case, these T. shirts were handed out for us to wear at the Our Price shop the day boy band East 17’s Steam album was released on October 17 1994.
With respect to E17, I had a more pressing evening engagement that Monday of 15 …

Listening To Eddie

Last Monday the grey drizzly streets of London in autumn seemed a long way from a summers day in Berkshire back in 1972. However the events of the latter came into clear focus when I spent an evening listening to Eddie, to paraphrase that famous bootleg title. The Eddie in question being Eddie Kramer the renowned veteran studio engineer who worked on a variety of Zep albums.
Eddie was in town to relay some of his personal stories at Metropolis Studios a part of his ‘’Kramer Archives & Waves Signature …

Led Zep 2 / Record shops / You Tube again (screaming not singing)

October is here and more anniversaries – as you can see on the site, October is Led Zeppelin 2 month around these parts – and maybe yours too.
It’s incredible to think that album has been around our world for nearly four decades – and having just played it for what will be the first of many a Zep 2 related playback over the next month, the effect is still electric.
I’m going to search out all the variations I have and give them an airing over the next month. The …
