CELEBRATION DAY RELEASES: THE COUNTDOWN IS ON – 5 DAYS TO GO/JIMMY ON LATER WITH JOOLS/ CELEBRATION DAY DVD PREVIEW COMMENTS/ CLASSIC ROCK AWARDS

The TBL Celebration Countdown continues…to mark the impending momentous worldwide release of  Celebration Day – the Led Zeppelin Ahmet Ertegun 02 reunion concert on DVD, Blue ray and CD on Monday November 19th 2012 , we are counting down to the day….

Countdown to the Celebration Day release …5  days to go.

Boogie With Jools…..

Jimmy Page returned to the ever popular BBC2 show Later…with Jools Tuesday night, his first visit to the show since the “Clarksdale” promotional appearance with Robert back in 1998.

Tonight’s appearance was promoting the much anticipated Celebration Day release and took the form of a short interview and a brief clip of Kashmir from the movie.  Page looked refreshed and seemed to enjoy the whole show, clapping enusthurically to Larry Graham, the former Sly And The Family Stone bassist and laughed at the guitarist from the Band Of Horse, who, during his solo walked over to where Jimmy was sitting and bowed in a “we are not worthy” fashion.

Nothing new in the interview, why do the gig, what was it like working with Jason, and then the question on the likelihood of seeing Zeppelin onstage ever again?

The final question being answered with the dignified “Well I thought that more gigs could follow the O2, but then 2,3,4 nearly 5 years later it’s all looking a bit unlikely!

A fuller version of the show will be aired on Friday night but unsure as to whether there’ll be any extra Page stuff but check out the programme for excellent performances from  Ellie Goulding and the American folk musician Rodriguez, who is the subject of the brilliant documentary, Searching for Sugarman. CELEBRATION DAY PACKAGES PREVIEW – INITIAL THOUGHTS:

Just received the Celebration Day review packages. Some initial comments: The package is very tastefully done with photos from the gig and four separate written contributions from Jimmy, Robert, John Paul and Jason on their 02 thoughts – Jason’s being very heart on the sleeve and Robert’s quite movingly profound.  The DVD itself…the sound is brilliantly mixed…the extras have a  Zeppelin media round up from UK TV reports – the rehearsal footage is a one camera shot by Dick Caruthers DV camera from the mixing desk so is a stark contrast to the close proximity of the 02 film. However it’s a fascinating visual document of just how ready they were with four days to go and a captivating behind the scenes remnant that adds yet more insight into the whole 02 experience.

Prepare to be astonished all over again…more thoughts tomorrow when I have had a good wade through…(DL).

* It  does seem the Celebration Day packages will be filtering out before the Nov 19th official release with Australia already noted as being a Friday release…when it comes your way let us know what you think…

CLASSIC ROCK ROLL OF HONOUR AWARDS:

I was at the Classic Rock Awards last night at London’s Roundhouse –it was great to see the reformed Family take the Sport Of Prog award and the classic line up Status Quo the Classic Album award for their 1977 Live album – Rick Parfitt sporting a very tidy non rock’n’roll haircut. Lynryd Skynyrd ‘s Comeback award was presented by renowned ex Melody Maker scribe and Omnibus Editior Chris Charlesworth a man I know well from editing some of my Zep books. Great to see awards too for Russ Ballard and Phil Manzanera. The Tommy Vance Inspiration award fittingly was awarded to the late John Lord with Bruce Dickenson and members of his family paying a very moving tribute. I spoke with Jeff Beck, Nick Mason, Mick Ralphs, Roger Chapman and the Manic’s James Dean Bradfield (more on that in the next TBL magazine). It was good to hook up with Peter Noble and Will Taylor from Noble PR, Classic Rock news editor Dave Ling and Neil Cossar of This Day In Music who have just produced A This Day In Classic Rock app. More on all this soon

Until tomorrow…

Keep reading – keep listening…

As Jimmy says there is real magic on that stage at the o2,no matter what RP does(and i have seen various permutations of black dog!)it doesnt have that tingle factor. One of these days its going to be too late for us and them, a real shame.

Dave – great review. I’m looking forward to our purchases. Pre ordered through Amazon who usually dispatch a little early. However I did order the vinyl set too ( have to have all formats covered!) and notice that release is delayed to the 10/12/12…. Any thoughts ?
Just an aside , in London yesterday I noticed the advertising for Celebration Day all over the Tube and a few bus stops. I even saw a poster in Las Vegas at the weekend!
Can’t wait to get my goodies 😉

Cheers Geoff. I’ll be sleeping outside WHS this Saturday night. No change there then.

    Hi all,

Dave’s TBL publication “From a Whisper to a Scream” is far better value than the Rolling Stone special.

I picked up the RS special on a recent trip to the USA and, far from “the ultimate guide to their music and legend”, it is simply a compilation of previously published stories and the lamented “top 40 songs” list.

My advice is save your money and avoid this shameless cash in on the release of Celebration Day.

Stick with the tried and true TBL product.

Yes Dave you are correct. I live in New Zealand and pick up my Blu Ray copy tomorrow. I have a great sound system and projector so i am very excited!

Malc. I’ve spoken to WH smith. They expected it in by this weekend.

Well done Jimmy – real dignity in that interview. He has moved on I think now, telling compared to earlier standard responses ( ” you’d better as Robert Plant that question” ).

Nevertheless you cannot but feel for Jimmy these days as his Kidderminster old chum continues to book dates into 2013.RP & the Strange Decisions indeed.

Re: the TV spot. The shot at 1:00 with the Zeppelin over the O2 should have been the front cover. Just stunning!

DOES ANYONE KNOW WHEN AND WHERE/HOW YOU CAN GET A COPY OF THE NEW ROLLING STONE COLLECTORS’ EDITION? I DON’T PARTICULARLY WANT TO ORDER A COPY FROM BARNES & NOBLE IN THE USA IF I CAN HELP IT. THANKS.

HAS IT ACTUALLY HIT THE SHOPS IN THE UK YET?

Does anybody else get moist-eyed looking at the TV spot?
