Countdown to the Celebration Day release …10  days to go.

First off – got be pleased for Jose Manuel Parada –our dear TBL man on the spot in Ecuador who a fair few of you will know. Jose came over for the 02 show itself but there had been no plans to screen the film in Ecuador and he was eying all the reports somewhat enviously…that is until yesterday when he sent this email:

 Hi Dave…!!!!

Yeahhh!!!!!! Check this out…….!!! This is not listed on the official webpage, but Cinemark is screening it tomorrow here in Guayaquil..!!!

Celebration Day –truly the global juke box!

If anyone deserves to see this film at last…then its Jose…

CLIVE DUNN 1920 -2012

Sad to hear of the passing of Clive Dunn age 92  who played  Corporal Jones in the comic genuis that still is Dad’s Army. There is a vague Led Zep connection here – Clive’ enjoyed a  number one  hit in 1971  with Grandad which was co-written by the late Kenny Pickett who was lead singer in the 1960s band The Creation (who’s guitarist Eddie Phillips pioneered the guitar bowing technique deployed also by Jimmy Page), Kenny later worked as a roadie with Zep in their early days.

DL DIARY UPDATE:

Work has begun here on the next TBL magazine this week which has included part 2 of Nick Anderson’s comprehensive Guide To Led Zeppelin UK Singles Pressings of which some of the rare resources can be seen above…plenty of other stuff coming in and Mike Tremaglio is readying an epic TBL 40 years on retrospective focusing on October to January 1972/3…

Had a look at this week’s NME which has a feature  focusing on The  Ultimate Band – in which stars, NME writers and the results of the polls on NME.com reveal the most popular fantasy group of all time. In the Vocalist spot Robert Plant was 7th (winner Freddie Mercury), Guitarist, Jimmy was 4th (winner Johnny Marr), Bassist, John Paul Jones was fourth (winner Flea Red Hot Chilies) and Drummer John Bonham was third (winner Dave Grohl)……and while we are on subject of the NME…..has anyone got a copy of the review of the Celebration Day film reviewed in last week’s edition of the NME? Would welcome a copy of that if anyone can scan it…

On the playlist Sandy Denny at The BBC, ( I aim to catch the Songs of Sandy Denny at the Barbican on BBC tonight) Led Zeppelin BBC Sessions (always a good one), The Who By Numbers (great interview with Pete in the current Zep Mojo edition – I will get around to getting his book at some point), David Bowie Alternate Ziggy Stardust and  Bob Dylan Rolling Thunder Review (thank you John P), Nick Drake Pink Moon and Time Of No Reply LP( Black Eyed Dog being a suitable soundtrack to some of the mood here recently). I’ll also be watching the annual Festival of Remembrance screened from the Royal Albert Hall tomorrow night which is always very moving.

This will all be in between a bit of rush writing job that has come my way and needs to be sorted by Monday.

Further to Geoff Adamson’s query, I’m also having trouble tracking down the Rolling Stone magazine here in the UK. Can anyone help? Thanks

So Robert & his Strange decisions head ‘down under’ next Easter then. That’ll eat up more time so to run down the clock more to avoid having to work with Jimmy,and/or JPJ.Jimmy will be on his way to 70 by then – just like then Motorhead song – Too late, too late.

All a real shame really, missed opportunity as exemplified by the brilliance of Celebration Day.

Yes, picked up the Rolling Stone special Zep issue with their top 40 Zep songs. No Achilles Last Stand, Bring It On Home, In the Light, For Your Life, Custard Pie, The Rover, Ten Years Gone,How Many More Times, I Can’t Quit You Baby and on and on. They should have named a top 50!

Led Zep check list…have seen the movie, bought the poster and pre-ordered the DVD.I’ve bought a day ticket for the Bluesfest at Byron to see Robert on the Saturday he’s performing and I’m thinking about grabbing a copy of the Special RS collectors edition as mentioned above.Oh and I’ll have to start saving for those album re-releases scheduled for next year. Whew! Can you ever have too much Zeppelin?
Must thankyou Dave for keeping us up to date.Really enjoyed the last TBL. I love having the published copy to flip through at my leisure even though I visit the website most days.Keep smiling.

Could you believe that Rolling Stone didn`t consider “Achilles Last Stand” as one of the 40 best Zeppelin songs ??? “Since I`ve Been Loving You” was only number 36 with “Fool In The Rain” as number 24… They need a hundred classes with TBL crew !!!

I am struggling to get hold of a copy of the Rolling Stone Collectors Edition. WH Smith dont appear to be stocking it. Can anyone give me a tip as to how I can get a copy in the UK or if the release date is due shortly?

    Thanks

I’m afraid that all the NME poll does is show the average age of its current readership. Jimmy Page 4th behind…Johnny Marr??? Surely even Marr would question that one….

The NME is now a comic, a cartoon parody of its 70’s heyday. We shall not see the likes of MacDonald, Kent, Clarke, and CSM again….
