THE TBL BOOKSHELF – MORE ESSENTIAL READING:

LED ZEPPELIN FEATHER IN THE WIND – OVER EUROPE 1980. WRITTEN AND COMPILED BY DAVE LEWIS

FREE COPY OF ISSUE 29 OF THE TBL MAGAZINE WITH EVERY ORDER!

In the summer of 1980, Led Zeppelin undertook what would be their final tour –a low key 14 date trek taking in Germany, Belgium, Holland, Austria and Switzerland. With a radically streamlined stage presentation and set list, the aim was to get back to being a working band after all the lay offs of recent years and grand scale of their 1979 Knebworth appearances.

This air of rejuvenation would inspire plans for a full scale tour of America in the autumn that would be sadly curtailed with the untimely death of John Bonham. Vastly under reported at the time, the Led Zeppelin Over Europe 1980 tour has taken on something of mythical status over the years. It found the band anxious to stamp their authority on a changing musical landscape as their reputation tethered like a feather in the wind.

Dave Lewis brings a fresh perspective in chronicling this final era, setting the scene with the build up to the tour, combining on the spot reports of the gigs from the time and retrospective views from those that were there both out front and backstage. The book includes an in depth gig by gig analysis of the 14 shows full bootleg, memorabilia and statistic appendix section and is illustrated throughout with many rarely seen photos and images.

The book also offers a unique up close and personal fans eye view of the era as re-told through Dave Lewis’ diaries of the time and his experiences of being in close proximity to the action during the tour. It all adds up to an illuminating volume that offers clear light on the final days of Led Zeppelin as they attempted to rejuvenate their career by doing what they did best – performing live on stage.

This is the Led Zeppelin tour that time forgot…until now – remembered and re-assessed in greater detail than any other single rock tour.

If you weren’t there then…you can be now…

Here’s some feedback form satisified readers:

‘’This book is incredible . Not only is it a road journal of the final Led Zeppelin tour in 1980  but it’s also a sentimental thesis of the beginning of an era that was never realized. It took five hours of my life last evening alone! I can’t wait to dive back into June of 1980 again tonight! Thanks again for doing what you do.’’ Daniel Neal/ France

‘’Dave Lewis is an incredible archivist and chronicler, and is an asset to rock journalism. He is a fan above all else, but a shrewd and passionate one at that. Feather In The Wind is a hefty tome and a worthy addition to any rock library.’’ Neil Daniels Fireworks rock magazine

‘’A brilliant dissection of the tour that time forgot. What emerges is an intriguing chronicle of the biggest band in the world contemplating their own vastness and legacy. But this is no obituary; instead Dave Lewis has skilfully woven a passionate celebration of a group who may well have been on the verge of an altogether different kind of greatness.’’ Terry Staunton Record Collector

FOR FANS NEW AND OLD, THIS IS THE DEFINITIVE COMPACT COMPANION TO LED ZEPPELIN’S MUSIC

Here’s some feedback from satisfied readers…

From a Whisper to a Scream is a biography of Led Zeppelin told through the music. Missing is the superfluous: no sharks, no groupies, no drinking or drugs. Just the music, year by year, album by album.

Starting with The Yardbirds demise, Lewis takes you through Led Zeppelin’s 11 year journey album by album, song by song and, to a lesser extent, tour by tour with the music always being the sole focus of the narrative. By focusing on the songs, how and when they were created, recorded and performed, Lewis creates a biography that’s extraordinarily detailed. It’s chock-a-block full of information, some that was new to me, presented in such a way From a Whisper to a Scream also works as a resource.

It is simply, one of the best Led Zeppelin books out there.

Brian Gardiner/ Ramble On blog

I had first heard of Dave Lewis in the mid-late 1990s when I purchased Led Zeppelin: The Concert File. I was absolutely blown away by the amount of detail that went into this book, I thought that it must have come from the heavens itself. I became a quick fan of his Tight But Loose website, which not only supported his long-running Led Zeppelin fanzine of the same name, but kept up-to-date information on everything Led Zeppelin. Some of his other books have gone into updated editions and he put out a book on the 1979 Knebworth concerts and Led Zeppelin’s 1980 European tour and I thought to myself, ‘What can possibly be written about Led Zeppelin that hasn’t been written before?”

Enter From a Whisper to a Scream: Complete Guide to the Music of Led Zeppelin.

Some other books have referenced Zeppelin’s discography, including Dave’s own A Celebration, however Whisper stands out from any others, due to the discography being the primary subject in this book. This is, in fact, an updated edition of Dave’s 2003 book “Led Zeppelin: The Complete Guide To Their Music” – with track-by-track analyses and live appearances of both studio albums, as well as compliations and their video discography. Also included is a very detailed timeline that chronologizes live Zeppelin dates, album releases and public appearances. Dave also lists the top 30 bootlegs from all parts of Zeppelin’s career as well as a though list of studio outtakes. No one will ever find another book like this in existance just for the simple fact that it was written by the ultimate Led Zeppelin fan. It doesn’t come off as a book written by a stiff, unknowning non-fan. It’s a very tight but loose and personable, reference manual.

If you’re a casual fan or a diehard Zeppaholic, this book will be a great read.

Jeff Strawman –Achilles Last Stand web site

I just wanted to pass on my opinion/review to you guys on an AMAZING Led Zeppelin book… I didn’t think I’d find myself reading yet another Led Zep biography, but “From A Whisper To A Scream” grabbed my attention right away. The first two pages set the tone by covering LZ’s career in short-paragraph form year-by-year summer which is really cool to quickly scan over. The book goes on to cover each album in similar fashion with many insight and details to individual songs that I didn’t know. Basically it’s the complete guide to the music of Led Zeppelin. And best of all the author Dave Lewis leaves out any of the hype, rumors and crap that we’ve come to expect for LZ biographies. From the moment I picked it up I couldn’t put it down (honestly). This book is EXTREEMLY well written and organized, right to the point, truly worth your time and the price is right too. I highly recommend it, and I wouldn’t state that lightly. Terry Stephenson/US

The ‘From a Whisper’ book arrived yesterday, and my wife was complaining as I was still reading it an hour after our ‘bedtime’! Timothy Campbell/UK
