JOHN PAUL JONES ON THE OCCASION OF HIS 70TH BIRTHDAY – 70 AT 70 – THE TBL PLAYLIST
John Paul Jones on the occasion of his 70th Birthday:
John Paul Jones is 70 today (January 3)…
Throughout the past 12 months, John has again moved effortlessly between differing projects and collaborations – and along the way, there was continued work on his opera project which may well see the light of day this year.
He remains the consummate musician – his work within Led Zeppelin and without, has constantly produced moments of sheer genius – to mark this landmark birthday, together with Richard Grubb, I have compiled a list in chronological order of 70 examples of his work as arranger, bassist, keyboardist and everything in between.
Whilst by no means a definitive listing – you will all have your fave moments that best represent his work, this TBL playlist acts as something of a snapshot of his vast musical achievements over the last 50 plus years – and it would certainly make a comprehensive 6 CD career retrospective.
I am sure many of these performances will be played today by countless fans across the globe – as we celebrate the 70th birthday of a master musician who continues to provide so much joy…
Happy Birthday John – from all of us to you…
Dave Lewis – January 3, 2016.

Dave,
I would have to add the one that makes one Jimmy Page smile, wink and nod towards John Paul Jones; Nosumi Blues from Zooma. This tasty tune always make me turn up the volume and restart it from the beginning! Happy Birthday Jonesy, you were the secret weapon of the Mighty Led Zep. Thank you for your musical gifts!
Wools
Beck’s Bolero…?
Happy Birthday JPJ! The 2006 Levee clip is a stone cold classic!
The man is an underrated genius and a class act.
Dusty Springfield – Ain’t No Sun Since You’ve Been Gone. Right up there…
Honorable JPJ mentions: straight rocker “Silver Train” on Scream for Help (w/Jon Anderson); “Nosumi Blues” on Zooma (Graffiti-type swing slide); and “Darlene” for rollicking New Orleans piano which conjures the image of the In Through the Outdoor cover art in my mind.
