Mick Farren 1943 – 2013
Very sad to hear the news that musician and writer Mick Farren has passed away age 69 after falling ill at gig with his band The Deviants at the Borderline. Mick was an iconic part of the UK counter culture and late 60s/70s music scene –The Deviants opened for Led Zeppelin in 1968. He was also a great writer and I loved his stuff in the NME –when I interviewed Charles Shaar Murray recently he was full of praise for Mick. RIP…
Here’s some info of The Deviants supporting Zep in 1968 via The Concert File book
SATURDAY OCTOBER 26 1968
BRISTOL, ENGLAND
BRISTOL BOXING CLUB
Mick Farren and Russell Hunter, members of The Deviants, both reminisce about supporting Zeppelin in the book, Days In The Life – Voices From The English Underground 1961 – 1971. Hunter recalls: “We supported Led Zeppelin at one of their first gigs. It was at the local Bristol boxing club and the audience hated us and despised them. Somebody threw a beer glass at the stage and Sid Bishop, our guitarist, unfortunately threw it back and cut somebody’s head. When Led Zeppelin came on, they got through a number and a half until the fire extinguishers, buckets, bricks and everything was being thrown at them.”
Mick Farren: “All these farm boys in brown suits and haircuts, who had come into town on Saturday night looking to get laid, marched in. Page and Plant were cracking up in the dressing room after we’d come off, saying how terrible we had been. They had got the same treatment because by now it was completely out of hand. We had to huddle inside the van while the farm boys bounced up and down on it and we didn’t escape until two in the morning when it was safe to go home.”
Here’s Mick on the David Frost show – one of the all time great TV clips…

Dave,
Just so you know, apparently within 10 years Madison Square Garden will be no more. Here is the link http://www.cnn.com/2013/07/25/us/new-york-madison-square-garden-relocation/index.html
Also, I saw Robert in Brooklyn Saturday. Great show. Number 12 for me. Of course I had to wear my Feather in the Wind T-shirt!
