In an exclusive interview with Dave Lewis for TBL discussing the Black Country Communion album, Glenn Hughes revealed the challenges he faced in remaking the Trapeze classic Medusa:

‘’Having Jason playing on one of his Dad’s favourite songs was a challenge in itself.  So recording it was highly charged and emotional. Joe was using Mel’s Black Beauty .This is Jason at his best and it’s like his Dad would have played it. I’ve got so much respect for his father. I mean we talk about John, we laugh about John and we don’t get morbid. I’m the elder statesman here and I’ve known Jason since he was two. Outside of the Jimmy, Robert and Jonesy, there can’t be many musicians who have played with both Bonham’s and I count myself very lucky to have done so.

Talking about the recording of the opening track Black Country title Glenn commented:  ‘’With Black Country, I knew in the call and response piece I wanted to have something profound to sing and the first thing I came up with ‘’I am a messenger’’. It seemed to fit really well. That’s a ‘51 bass actually. I am playing my ‘65  on a lot of the album. I was unsure about the bass track on Black Country. I was going for an early Trapeze sound and making it sound really deep and dirty. There is a full on turbo on the opening track – a bit of Purple and Zeppelin. It’s definitely a tip of the hat but when you’ve got a Bonham on the drums, you may as well have a Bonham doing Bonham. We didn’t set out to sound like any band from the 70s but we did want to make a traditional rock album that could be placed next to say a Zep 4.’’

Explaining Joe Bonamassa’s role within the band Glenn had this to say:  ‘’We know in the rock world that Joe’s the blues titan of the moment and he will continue to be because he’s a purist. Joe also spent a lot of time listening to Purple and Free and Zep. We don’t have a blues player that wants to be a rock player, we have for the first time in my opinion since Jimmy, a blues player that transcends to rock and does it appropriately. Recording the album Joe really cranked it out and the Marshall’s were getting louder as we went along’’

With the Black Country Communion album set to go and his own UK tour about to commence Glenn is well up for playing live.  ‘’With Black Country Communion all the songs can be played live, we know that as we played them live in the studio. I’m back in a band and I feel totally rejuvenated and I think as a live band it’ll be pretty unstoppable. As for my own tour – it’s going to be a best of Glenn Hughes rock set.  So it will take in my albums Hughes/ Thrall and more. It will be my rocker side, not the smoother stuff. Expect a full on rock blast. Recording the Black Country Communion album has really got me in the mood and I’m looking forward to getting out there.’’

Can I ask the obvious question – when did Glenn play with Bonzo?
I saw Glenn play in Deep Purple(with Tommy Bolin) at Wembley Arenain 1976!At least I think it was ’76!!
