JOHN PAUL JONES ON TOUR WITH  SUPERSILENT:

Here’s some words on the Birmingham Town Hall show from Kevin Hewick:

Somewhere in the incredible 90 minutes of Supersilent at Birmingham Town Hall did I hear a brief burst of the descending ‘Dazed And Confused’ bass intro?!

John was awesome on electronically treated 12 string bass in an intense trio setting, imagine a touch of electric Miles Davis crossed with if the intro to ‘In the Light’ was extended to last for the whole of ‘Physical Graffiti’ . This was an extraordinary show featuring the man who was crucial to Zeppelins unique sound. Kevin Hewick

Catch it while you can… tonight at the Manchester RNCM, tomorrow night at the Bristol Arnolfini and Sunday at the London Village Underground. The winner of the TBL competition to win two tickets for the London show is Mick Bulow. Many thanks to all that entered.

TBL PRE SUPERSILENT WITH JOHN PAUL JONES LONDON GIG MEET:

I aim to be pitching up for the London Village underground gig. The pre gig TBL pub meet location is the Wetherspoons Hamilton Hall at the Bishopsgate exit of Liverpool Street Station. I am aiming to be in around 5-30 to 6pm. Look forward to seeing all that can make it along.

Here’s the pub ref:

NICK MASON AT THE CLASSIC ROCK AWARDS –THOUGHTS ON CELEBRATION DAY:

I had a quick word with Pink Floyd’s Nick Mason at the Classic Rock Awards – I had seen him at the London premiere of the Celebration Day film and he re-iterated the comments I had read before when I asked him at the Awards what he thought of it.

‘’I am really glad they filmed it but it wasn’t the best live film mainly because in my view they did not have enough cameras -there’s not one complete drum fill from Jason Bonham, it was cut away – that said I think it’s a really good thing they have made the film’’. Nick was there to pick up the reissue of the year award for the Pink Floyd Immersion project and the DVD of the year for the making Of Wish You Were Here film. With Jimmy now working on the Zep catalogue for reissue, I therefore asked him what Jimmy might be able to take from the way the Floyd’s catalogue was handled. ‘’I don’t think Jimmy needs to learn much from us -he is quite capable of making a very good job of it all’’

THE PINK FLOYD DIMENSION:

And on that theme ….I am having a little diversion away from the Zep Celebration Day frenzy tonight to set the controls for the heart of the Bedford Corn Exchange to see the excellent  tribute band The Pink Floyd Dimension  The band line up includes TBL man Tom Cory. More details at:

http://www.tpfd.co.uk/

And still with the Pink boys – here’s a pic I took travelling on the train out of London earlier this week of an iconic Floyd related landmark. No flying pigs to be seen though..

CELEBRATION DAY RELEASES:

The Celebration Day releases should begin to filter out this weekend – let us know what you think…

Have a great weekend…

Until next time…

Keep reading – keep listening…

got the 2cd x2dvd set yesterday,i thought the rehearsal dvd was to be honest..crap.i did expect to see the lads going through the songs and perhaps stoping and having a laugh and making cock ups on the way,i mean using one camera is not on,on the plus side i thought the concert dvd was excellent through out the sound is excellent in fact it just as if you were there,i would like to hear what others thought of my comments, its just my personnel opinion…gerald

I was able to get a copy of Celebration Day on Sat from a local record shop. It is absolutely amazing.
As I drove home blasting In My Time of Dying, tears streaming from my eyes, i was in disbelief that a band that had not played together in some 27 years could sound so spectacular. When I arrived home I watched the DVD at a volume much louder than the theater I had seen the movie at. It is phenomenal. I watched it again a few hours later when my 14 year old son, who is becoming quite a Zeppelin fan, came home. Again I sat there, with him, in absolute amazement. It was Zeppelin going for it, not playing it safe, not cleaning up their sound or adding extra players like so many bands do. I think an article in Rolling Stone said it best, “They were the best – and still are.” I can’t wait to watch it again today.

I picked up the bluray version of Celebarton Day here in Melbourne on Saturday.

Three joyous screenings have ensued. No complaints from the neighbors…. Yet.

No doubt about it, the film is absolutely sensational!!!!!!

As Dave described it in his initial reviews, “joyous” is indeed the word. Joyous completely describes the reactions of all four band members and, of course, the audience there on the night, and all of us watching it at home or at the cinema.

If the lads never perform together, or individually, ever again, they can be justly proud of that last concert.

Truly magnificent, especially with the 5.1 volume cranked up to 11!

Highlights: TSRTS – can that Bonham kiddie drum or what?; IMTOD – Mr Page in excelsis; Trampled Underfoot – showcasing JPJ’s mastery; and Robert belting out Kasmir as if his very life depended on it.

    Genius and joy abounds!

    Dave
went to the Royal Northern College of Music last night to watch Supersilent featuring JPJ. The hall was three quarters full and was a mixture of Zep fans and electronic music fans. It reminded me of going to see Tangerine Dream many years ago where you sit quietly whilst 3 men hunch over various instruments and boxes with wires to construct soundscapes.
John spent a lot of time programming his i mac and i pod during the improvisation and for a non technician it was hard to tell what sound he was making as everything was so electronically treated. If this sounds like i didn’t enjoy it well actually there were moments i felt engaged and the second (encore?) piece started with a terrific bit of jazz bass.
At the endof the day 15 quid to sit 6 rows in front of one of your heroes is worth anyones cash. a computer printed sheet served as a programme and i have a spare if you need it? Enjoy London

The radio broadcast is extended but this version is video and lasts 4mins 20s… Enjoy!

Received the pre ordered package this morning (2cd, 2 dvd) and watched the concert this afternoon. After all the bootlegs of this show and the cinema experience last October, still a very very large WOW factor! This makes up for unfortunately not being in the audience that night. And it’s a great addition to my Rotterdam Ahoy 1975 and 1980 live experiences. For now, maybe in the heat of the moment, I think I prefer the home viewing above the cinema experience. I know what I will be listening to the next couple of days!
