Whitesnake are the latest band to announce they are confident of receiving an invitation from Led Zeppelin to join them on a forthcoming world tour.

In the last few months, The Cult and The Stone Temple Pilots have claimed to be lined up as support bands for a fully fledged Led Zeppelin tour and now Whitesnake have joined the list of hopefuls, with front man David Coverdale insisting they are very likely to be given a coveted place alongside the legendary band.

He told British newspaper the Daily Mirror, “I’m expecting a call from Jimmy (Page) any day asking my band Whitesnake to support them on a world tour.

“Am I on board? You bet! (It’s) probably worth billions!” And Coverdale is convinced that if Led Zeppelin do tour – it will far outstrip the efforts of fellow veteran rockers The Rolling Stones.

He adds, “Unlike rolling out the wheelchairs with the umpteenth Rolling Stones World Tour, a Led Zeppelin tour will be incredible”.

In a interview to promote Whitesnakes latest album and forthcoming tour, supporting Def Leppard, one can’t help and wonder if Coverdale mentioning Jimmy and Led Zeppelin wasn’t just a excuse to gain a few extra column inches in the press.

STOP PRESS: As we were going to press David Coverdale has issued a statement denying making comments to the U.K. press about supporting Led Zeppelin on tour, insisting he has no idea where the statement came from.

Coverdale was quoted in the Daily Mirror insisting, “Am I on board? You bet! (It’s) probably worth billions!” However, Coverdale now insists the quotes did not come from him, because Whitesnake are too busy with their own tour to support anybody else.

He tells website Classic Rock.com, “May I call upon your assistance to help put out this s**tstorm that’s been gathering steam about me, supposedly saying I’m awaiting Lord Page’s call to invite me to be the supporting act on the forthcoming Led Zeppelin world tour. What f**king world tour, we ask ourselves? We’re already out on our Good To Be Bad world tour, thank you very much! I have no idea where this started.” And the former Deep Purple rocker admits a union between Led Zeppelin and Whitesnake would be highly unlikely, due to his past conflicts with Led Zeppelin co-founder Robert Plant.

He explains, “I assure you there is no foundation in this. Why, after all the charming back-and-forths between one Monsieur Plant and oneself through the years, who could imagine such a premise possible? Not me. “Whitesnake will not be joining Led Zeppelin on a world tour.”
