So what is this book all about and why should you invest?

The Format:

30 x 30 album size de-luxe hardback book

288 pages  – including approximately 62 colour photos, 155 black & white photos – 229 in all – plus 165 colour memorabilia images including Earls Court bootleg LP, CD and DVD sleeves etc.

Drawn from over 350 images sourced from various contact sheets provided by publisher Mark Smith, and with the assistance of Ross Halfin as associate picture editor, the best photos possible have been selected. Knowing that there has been a host of photos of the band at Earls Court published over the years, the objective was to select rarely seen images and unusual angles.

Amongst the many images are scenes of the stage being set up, close ups of the acoustic set, the band performing four part harmony on Tangerine, the Jimmy Page violin bow solo in Dazed And Confused, John Bonham explaining “football is a load of bollocks” and the Led Zeppelin emblazoned sign in view as they perform their encore numbers. In effect, every aspect of Led Zeppelin’s Earls Court performances is represented.

In laying out the photos for design and to get the feel of the five glorious nights, I have separated the photos into five sections each representing the individual concerts performed. Where possible, I have sequenced the photos in to something of a set list order for each night  and supplemented them with some of Robert Plant’s comments from the stage at the time, along with a series of press comments that demonstrate the esteem in which these concerts were held by reviewers at the time. I have also attempted to match the photos to the nights they were taken though this has not always been possible. The bulk of the images used are from the May 17, 18 and 24 gigs – less photos have surfaced of the May 23 and 25 gigs. Therefore, I have applied some artistic license within the photo spreads to represent each night and performance.

Overall, much thought has gone into the presentation of the photos to best capture the visual impact of the superb images we have selected. The pic here shows another intensive wade through the proofs at StudioMix recently.

To complement the photo content, there’s a Preface that explains why these concerts were amongst the most important the band ever performed – plus interviews with promoter, Mel Bush, photographer, Barry Plummer and journalist Chris Welch. The appendix sections bring together various selected images of Earls Court bootlegs and magazine covers, and there’s also an appraisal of the 2015 reissue of Physical Graffiti.

The Foreword is provided by long time rock radio DJ, Nicky Horne who introduced the band on stage at the May 24 gig.

Five Glorious Nights is in a strictly limited edition of 1,200 books.

Rufus Stone Limited Editions have a proven record of producing large format books of high quality – their catalogue includes Deep Purple at the California Jam, Jon Lord All Those Years Ago and The Beatles Monochrome. This is a high end price but as you will see by visiting the Rufus Stone site, they pride themselves on producing quality books to an exceptionally high standard.

All books are individually numbered and printed on high quality paper with high end binding.

The book design is by Mick Lowe at StudioMix – highly regarded designer of previous Dave Lewis, Led Zeppelin books Feather In The Wind – Over Europe 1980 and Then As It Was – At Knebworth 1979.

I personally feel a huge responsibility to ensure this book is worth every penny of the asking price – and have been doing my upmost to meet that challenge.

Latest progress update: After weeks of collation, design and layout with Mick, I am very pleased to announce that the design stage is very nearly a wrap. We have spent the past week revising the photo content as required and checking the text -the book should go into printing production next week. More news of the ship out date will follow.

To summarise:

Much more than a mere book of photos, the intention is to capture the atmosphere of the five Earls Court shows through these startling images – sequenced and presented in a way that unfolds the whole saga of this remarkable series of concerts – to be viewed and enjoyed time and time again.

Five Glorious Nights at Earls Court in May 1975 will be a superbly presented unique visual record of Led Zeppelin in their absolute prime.

Robert Plant and Alsion Krauss on stage at Lead Belly tribute concert:

Robert Plant, Alison Krauss and Buddy Miller were among the dozen artists who did just that, as some of the biggest names in roots music teamed up to perform songs made famous by a musician whose folk standards have influenced everyone from the Beatles to Johnny Cash to Carolina Chocolate Drops.

Most of the near-capacity crowd attending the “Lead Belly at 125: A Tribute to an American Songster” program appeared more chronologically aligned with 67-year-old Plant than 32-year-old former Chocolate Drop Dom Flemons, who served as the evening’s host. Still, that didn’t stop the audience from swapping the formal wear usually worn by Kennedy Center guests for jeans, t-shirts and even sneakers, or shouting out their approval when Plant and Krauss — accompanied by Miller and Viktor Krauss — performed some of the evening’s final numbers, including a spine-tingling rendition “Out on the Western Plains.”

TBL Archive: Jimmy Page & Robert Plant: 1995 Tour:

Leading on from last week’s Page & Plant retro focus – here is Part Three of  the piece that originally ran in TBL 12: It focuses on an imaginary 4 CD compilation of the tour: CD 3 rounds up the US second leg and South America dates:

CD3 – US second leg /South America

‘Heartbreaker’/’Rock And Roll’

(El Palacio De Los Deportes Arena, Mexico City, Sept 24 1995)

The US fall tour opened with two riotous nights in Mexico City. The enthusiasm for being back on the road again was obvious as these two segments demonstrated.

An encore barrage of two classic rockers – ‘Heartbreaker’ played in full for the first time on the tour (later versions omitted the final verse when segueing into ‘Ramble On’ or ‘What Is’) and ‘Rock And Roll’ – making a long awaited entry into the set. The video that surfaced from the show captured the sheer enjoyment of both band and audience.

‘Bring It On Home’/’What Is And What Should Never Be’

(Fiddlers Green Amphitheatre, Denver, Colorado, September 30 1995)

They really began to cook on this part of the tour. This Denver show witnessed the elevation of ‘Bring It On Home’ into the set opener slot where it paved the way for a welcomed Zep II throwback ‘What Is And What Should Never Be’. This had been tried in a somewhat shaky manner at the MTV filming. They now felt confident to push it back to the forefront of their live show.

‘That’s The Way’/’Friends’

(Shoreline Amphitheatre, Mountain View, California, October 7 1995)

The US fall tour now hit a real peak with shows at Irvine (October 3) Boise (October 9) and Salt Lake City (October 10) taking them to a new level of consistency. In between there was a memorable Saturday night at the Shoreline from which this pair from Zep III emerged. Plant’s singing and phrasing was significently poignant during this version of ‘That’s The Way’, played in the now familiar MTV filming semi electric version. ‘Friends’ came complete with the atmospheric Pharaohs finale with Page raising the tempo for the songs climax.

‘Whole Lotta Love’ medley including ‘The Ocean’/’How Many More Times’/’We’re Gonna Groove’/’Break On Through’/’Dazed And Confused’ inserts

(Shoreline Amphitheatre, October 7 1995)

By now ‘Whole Lotta Love’ was firmly established as the vehicle for all manner of medley fun. This 21-minute marathon packed it all in: the Knebworth 79 revamped riffing, Plant’s “Na na na na na na” ‘Ocean’ chorus, Page’s flashy theremin battle and subsequent Zeppelin re encarnated riffing, and then the real fun started.

“I give you all I got to give… rings, pearls and all.”

Charlie rolled out that evocative bass line and there was ‘How Many More Time’ being played live for the first time since the Zep US shows in 1975. This than led into ‘We’re Gonna Groove’ on its first live outing for some 26 years. The more familiar ‘Break On Through’/’Dazed’ inserts completed the medley, though not before Page had ripped into a scintillating wah wah run. One of the greatest performances of the entire tour.

‘Over The Hills And Far Away’

(United Center Chicago, Illinois, October 13 1995)

Yet another first. ‘Over The Hills’ performed live for the first time since August 11, 1979. Perhaps not quite in the LA ’77 class but still very welcome. The confidence of Plant’s voice was highlighted by his decision to sing the chorus in the high register, something he never attempted in the post-1972 Zep era.

‘Ramble On’/’Laride’/Nigel Eaton solo/’Gallows Pole’

(Madison Square Garden, New York, October 27 1995)

The Garden was always going to be special and they did not disappoint. ‘Ramble On’ had been a consistent part of the set but this incarnation was the last to benefit  from Porl Thompson’s duel lead guitar part – he was to leave the band soon after this show. The arrangement did lose a little when Page later attempted it on his own. It shined brightly for this final time as a guitar duet on this night with Plant lifting the song with his “Come on children… come on children” refrain. Nigel Eaton’s hurdy gurdy solo, appearing under its grand title ‘Laride’, was altered slightly for the fall leg and now merged directly into ‘Gallows Pole’. The latter did suffer a little from over exposure, being the only song to be played on every single date. This version featured a speeded-up finale with Page demonstrating his understanding of the folk tradition.

‘No Quarter’

(Apoteose Square, Rio De Janeiro, Brazil, January 27 1996)

To the vast open air arena of Rock in Rio. “It’s a great pleasure to bring you a man who hasn’t played in your city before. Please give a warm welcome to Mr Jimmy Page,” was Robert’s enthusiastic introduction to ‘No Quarter’. By this time the track had developed into an improvised Page-led opus far removed from the simple MTV Unledded delivery. At the beginning Page employed the same chord sequence he used to open his ‘White Summer’ solos in the Zep era. Not the easiest of live pieces to deliver and sometimes not the always best received, they kept with it, turning in 102 performances.

Boot Led Zeppelin celebrates Led Zeppelin at Earls Court with 40th anniversary Shepherds Bush gig:

Just a reminder that the UK tribute band Boot Led Zeppelin will be celebrating the 40th anniversary of the famous Zep Earls Court shows with a showcase gig on Saturday May 9. The venue is the Shepherds Bush Empire in London. The band will be be recreating the magic of Zep in ’75 with a special Earls Court set.

DL Diary Update:

earls on april 25 4

There’s no getting away from Earls Court for me right now…after an intensive week on the Led Zep Earls Court photo book, last Saturday morning on the way to the Olympia Record Fair, I checked out the status of the Earls Court building and it’s still standing at the moment though all boarded up…the guys there told me it will take a good year to demolish…it still looked awe inspiring 40 years on from those epic concerts…

it was slightly eerie walking around the now caged and boarded up building…”Welcome to Earls Court. For the next three hours, your mother wouldn’t like it. Will you please welcome back to England, Messrs Bonham, Jones, Page and Plant. Led Zeppelin!”….I am sure I heard those words spoken on May 24, 1975 by DJ Nicky Horne echoing around this building as I gazed up at where the five glorious nights unfolded….the ghost of May 1975….

Talking of whom – Nicky Horne has very kindly contributed an excellent scene setting Foreword to the Earls Court photo book . I met up with Nicky recently at the Bad Company Reissues playback staged by Team Rock. Pic here is by David Cunningham. He is still the consummate rock broadcaster…

Dave and Nicky Horne 2

The Olympia Fair was a welcome respite from the book design work. There was some great stuff on display and one or two little treats were accumulated – in my current collecting quest to buy all the singles that I would have purchased between 1969 and 1972 if I could have afforded to – a few were located at the fair as follows:

Mick Jagger – Memo From Turner  – 1969 Decca single from the Performance soundtrack.

Arrival – Friends – great version of the Terry Reid composition –  Decca single from 1970.

The Rolling Stones – Brown Sugar/Bitch/Let It Rock maxi single – the 1971 inaugural release on Rolling Stones Records.

Family – In My Own Time – superb 1971 single.

On album, I picked up Jack Bruce’s 1974 solo album Out Of The Storm on RSO and the Family Anyway album on UK Reprise in the special fold over clear PVC sleeve.

Plus Supergroups 1970 compilation (or sampler as it was then) on Polydor –some very fine stuff on this – I am a sucker for 70s sampler albums like this…and finally a great little find – The Song Remains The Same Soundtrack double album Argentinian Swan Song promo pressing…lovely!

The DL joy of vinyl continues unabated…you gotta have your little treats…!

As mentioned above, Mick and I are very near a wrap on the design and layout of the Earls Court book – many a recent hour has gone into the final revising and checking of the photo placement and text – and may I offer a massive thanks to Mick Lowe for all his design skills and patience and Mike Tremaglio for all his input in the overseeing of the text and proof reading. This past month has been a bit of a trial what with Janet’s mum Bet still in hospital with a chest infection – so getting through it all has not been easy – and may I also offer big thanks to for the good lady Janet for all her support.

On the playlist – Joni Mitchell Court And Spark (here’s hoping that Joni is improving), Elton John Caribou (much underrated 1974 album), Fairport Convention Liege and Lief, a good old blast of Blueberry Hill via the Eat a Peach label CD reissue, Wings Venus And Mars (Macca at his melodic best)The ever brilliant Destroyer album set (38 years gone on April 27 – oh and Silverdome Pontiac 38 years today)) and plenty of Led Zeppelin at Earls Court as there will be throughout what will be a momentous May as the 40th anniversary of those epic five glorious nights unfolds…
