John Paul Jones – On the occasion of his birthday:

John Paul Jones is 69 today (January 3rd)

Throughout the past 12 months, John has again moved effortlessly between differing projects and collaborations.  Occasional work with Seasick Steve, Supersilent and Minibus Pimps plus an album with the latter unit – well received touring activity with Dave Rawlings Machine and along the way, there was continued work on his opera project – The Ghost Sonata, based on a Strindberg work.

He remains the consummate musician – his work within Led Zeppelin and without, has constantly produced moments of sheer genius – some examples of which can be viewed below.

Happy Birthday John – from all of us to you…

TBL 2015 – Plans ahead:

During the past few weeks I’ve been firming up various TBL projects that will unfold in 2015 and beyond. Here is a summary of what I can reveal so far.

Firstly there is a major new book project ahead:

So announcing…

Evenings With Led Zeppelin

The in-concert performance history of Led Zeppelin 1968 – 1980

by Dave Lewis & Mike Tremaglio

This is something Mike and I have been preparing and planning for a few months and we now have a firm plan ahead for this project.

Mike needs no introduction to TBL readers as his work has featured in the TBL magazine for many issues.

His diligence in researching the concert history of Led Zeppelin is second to none. Our objective is to formulate a book that chronicles the in – concert performance history of Led Zeppelin in greater detail and accuracy than ever before.

EveningZep-4

Based on the extensive touring logs that Mike has compiled, many of which have been featured in the TBL magazine, this book will log every known Led Zeppelin performance, illuminated by contemporary reviews, key background information, set lists, and bootleg references – all heavily illustrated with rare ads, posters and visuals

The projected format for the book is a studious hardback volume with over 400 plus pages – this is not a large format picture book – the emphasis is on detailed accurate text.

This is obviously a major project and  it will evolve over the coming year and beyond for future publication – we will update on the progress as it all moves along.

In effect Evenings With Led Zeppelin is the complete story as told from the place where they functioned best – live on stage.

Evenings With Led Zeppelin – The Call Out:

In producing what we believe will be the most accurate log of Led Zeppelin’s performance history, we are keen to hear from fans who saw Led Zeppelin or took photos of the band or possess rare memorabilia that they would like to contribute to the book. This can take the form of anecdotes on seeing Zep in concert, on and off stage photos etc. All contributions will be fully credited.

If you would like to  contribute to the book please contact in the first instance myself on the usual email below:

davelewis.tbl1@ntlworld.com

We look forward to hearing from all potential contributors.

In summary:

This a project Mike and I will be beavering away on throughout 2015 and beyond. Alongside various other TBL projects, this is certainly going to keep me very busy and will be one of a number of plates I’ll be spinning here.

I am eagerly looking forward to this this collaboration with Mike and an end result that will ensure Evenings With Led Zeppelin is an essential addition to all self- respecting Led Zeppelin fan’s bookshelf.

Other TBL Initiatives:

TBL 1975 Snapshots:

With the 40th anniversary of Led Zeppelin’s activities in 1975 upon us -we will be celebrating this era with a series of TBL 1975 Snapshots  – this will take the form of postingss covering specific gigs, bootlegs, events, quotes pics etc from the era, with particular spotlight on the period January to May 1975.  These will run periodically on the TBL Facebook pages and on the TBL website postings.

This is designed to track the progress of the year as it unfolded and capture the sprit of the time.

1975 was of course a pivotal year for Led Zeppelin with the US tour, the release of Physical Graffiti and the run of Earls Court shows. This was followed by Robert Plant accident and the enforced decision to record the album that would become Presence in Munich in the fall of the year.

In celebration of this 40th anniversary, TBL will be constantly revisiting this landmark period in the coming weeks with the aim to enhance your enjoyment manifold  – these celebrations will of course include the forthcoming release of the reissue of Physical Graffiti.

Watch out for the first TBL 1975 Snapshots very soon.

DL Diary Update:

vinyl barn january 2

So here we are in 2015. The good lady Janet and I sent a most enjoyable new years eve at the local White Horse pub over the road from us. The feel good factor was enhanced with the news that the ladlord and landlady Nigel and Sue Anstead had been named in the new years honours – being awarded a British Empire medal or their services to raising money for local charity’s and the community.

After all the Christmas build up and new year festivities, yesterday was spent focusing on the planning and preparation of the various TBL projects mentioned above. There was time however to nip into town and get 2015 officially underway – as the first vinyl albums of the year were purchased! Miles Davis Bitches Brew, Simon & Garfunkel Bridge Over Troubled Water (on CBS Quadrophonic – I now  need two extra speakers!), The Best Of Delaney & Bonnie and Mountain- Avalanche CBS Dutch pressing– a very nice crop at Darren Harte’s  excellent Vinyl Barn stall in Bedford.

Check out Darren’s site at

http://www.vinylbarn.co.uk/

On the player: Jethro Tull This was Island original (thank you Andrew R!) John Martyn Live At (thank you John P!) and Led Zeppelin Royal Divinity Royal Albert Hall 1970with the 45th anniversary due next week. There’s a whole backlog of stuff to get to that I have not had time to get to during the past few weeks and I am looking forward to a big vinyl and CD catch up.

It’s going to be a lot quieter around here as with Sam already back in London, Adam returns to University at Eastbourne later today – it’s been fantastic having them around these past couple of weeks.

I have made plenty of new year resolutions (too many to list!) as this is always a time to reflect on the year and move forward with a new air of positivity. It will all kick start in a big way from next week  as we all return to something of a normal routine and I need to be fast off the mark to get the TBL 2015 projects schedule underway as we go ever onward into a new year.

Great news about the new live book “An evening…”.

I enjoyed the original Concert File, I was very disappointed with the 2nd revised edition (mainly because it was pocket sized and filled with typos) so this is exciting news indeed.

    Good Luck!

Good luck with the new book project, Dave.
I’ve got the two Zep Concert File books, which covered lots of undocumented ground and made fascinating reading for those wanting to learn of the band’s live history.
Sincere appreciation for keeping the Zep flag flying.

Happy birthday John.I still stand by what was printed in TBL 14, That ZOOMA is still the greatest post Zep release by any band member.

Hello Dave, I noticed you were doing an article on Zeppelin from 1968-1980.I am sure you have seen this before, but I have an original poster from January 1970, I know its original because I asked if I could have it when at their concert. It was stuck on Birmingham Town Hall wall, it advertises them at the Town Hall, its 30inches high x 20 inches wide, not in perfect condition I have to say, but as far as I know there are only 2 in existance. If you want I can send you an image, although not in good condition I have had some great offers for it but, having had it for 44years it would be like losing an arm.
    Regards
    Pete

Happy belated Birthday to the unsung hero of Led Zeppelin! As the years pass, his contributions become more celebrated, and that’s as it should be. I was listening yesterday to the newly remastered LZ 1, and his playing on that has never sounded better. Jimmy did a great job on these remasters in showcasing all of the players in the mixing, it’s seamless and the music breathes anew.

I echo Wools, it would be great to see JPJ team with Jimmy. Who knows, maybe Jimmy will make the call if he really puts a band together in 2015…

Great clips Dave, and great news on the Evenings With Led Zeppelin project! Can’t wait for that!

Again, Happy Birthday Jonesy, and thanks for all the great music!

Thanks Dave for the No Quarter link – what would you not give to see that Simone-esq grand piano/gibson interplay at somewhere like the Cadogan Hall. This piece should be on the musical syllabus at all schools.
In the meantime i’ll empty some space on the book shelf for the forthcoming books.

  • Albert Borg said:

I’m very excited to hear of both your Evenings With Led Zeppelin & Earls Court book projects. Work your usual magic researching every LZ minutiae for us.

  • Wools said:

    Dave,
Thank you for dusting Levee Breaks from the Hard Rock; a nice reminder that I have not seen in sometime. I am sure that even Jimmy Page would be grinning ear to ear if this clip was ever reviewed by the guitarist.
Happy Birthday John Paul Jones; the secret weapon of Led Zep! Hopefully sometime in the future see’s JPJ and JP working together in some form or another. Zooma was and remains one of my post Zep release favorites. Some very excellent gems found there.
Dave, much success on your very busy 2015 projects!

    Wools

That is, without question, the best version of “Are You Gonna Go My Way” of all time. Jones is just so locked in on the groove; you can listen to what he’s doing and tune out the rest of the band he’s so good.
