ROBERT PLANT NEW BAND SENSATIONAL SPACE SHIFTERS SET FOR WOMAD FESTIVAL DEBUT IN JULY
Robert Plant and his new band the Sensational Space Shifters will make their live debut as headliners of this year’s Womad, as the festival celebrates its 30th anniversary. The group comprising the former Led Zeppelin frontman, members of his former backing band Strange Sensation and regular collaborator Justin Adams say they draw inspiration “from the roots music of Mississippi, Appalachia, Gambia, Bristol and the foothills of Wolverhampton”.
The first Womad – an acronymn for World of Music, Arts and Dance – was conceived by Genesis singer Peter Gabriel, and took place at the Royal Bath & West showground in Shepton Mallet, Somerset, in 1982. The first bill featured Echo & the Bunnymen, the Drummers of Burundi, Don Cherry, Simple Minds, Suns of Arqa and the Chieftans.
Over the intervening 30 years, the organisation has hosted festivals across the globe, from Sicily to Seattle, Adelaide to Abu Dhabi. For the sixth time, its flagship UK festival will be at Charlton Park, near Malmesbury in Wiltshire.
The 2012 lineup will also include Indian breakthrough star Raghu Dixit, the Buena Vista Social Club, French collective Lo’Jo, “funk orchestra” Grupo Fantasma and the Alaev Family from Tajikistan, with many more acts to be announced
Womad takes place at Charlton Park, Malmesbury, Wiltshire, 27–29 July.

Have to agree with Andrew above, BoJ was a bit boring, Strange Sensation better, but hey Robert, we’re all getting old here, can’t you drag Page out of his house and put him to work for a few months without worrying about the weight of it all, just have some fun!
According to several sites now, the lineup at his show in Clarksdale, MS will include Justin Adams, Juldeh Camara, Patty Griffin, John Baggott, Billy Fuller and Dave Smith so that might be an idea of the lineup at Womad as well. I noticed on the Womad site it said in addition to members of JuJu and Strange sensation there would be “a splash and dash of the Americas” so who knows…

I doubt that the “new band” will amount to little more than a European rag-tag combo to enable the tall old one to enjoy a summer off of real active duty.
side note: I do miss the forum based sites like planet-zeppelin. A guy can’t rant anymore without the all in the open social media knowing who everyone is these days. Pity.
Justin & Juldeh will also be touring with their 4-piece band, JUJU throughout the summer.

Agree with RichardG above, Band of Joy was something I couldn’t get overly excited about, they were good, but something was missing. I thought Strange Sensation was a great band so was disappointed when that went no further. Justin Adams is a great person for Robert to work with.
On a side note I’ve just been on Robertplant.com and can’t acess it on an iPad as it’s a Flash site….they need to to sort that!
Great News ~ Robert continues to amaze.
There’s got to be a tour as well – and an album??
Fantastic news, can’t wait. Strange Sensation for me still had some unfinished business, and with Juldeh Camara on board it’s going to be imncredible, check out the Womad Abu Dhabi clips on you tube.
Changed my mind!Anyone for a Crown vic reunion tour?
Not my cup of tea at all, was hoping for one more go with James before they get too old!Thought BOJ might get it out of RP’s system.
Obviously not!Seems to be a case of anybody but Jim and JPJ.Sensationally shifting the Zep back catalogue out of all shape is rather a mouthfull, but just a wee bit more apt!Rant over. Now how about an acoustic blues covers album Jim and John paul?
This is sensational news Dave …SS were amazing and I was so lucky to see them many times. I’d love to go and see them at Womad. Justin and Juldeh are a sensation in themselves but with RP there …wow!!!!
Working on Michael…..will have to work hard!!
Good luck Richard on changing your hols….oh but it will be so worth it!!
Thanks for the news…made my day !
Best news in a LONG time! Loved BoJ, but Robert & Justin were so in tune, for me it’s probably his best line up since the 70s.
I’ve just checekd the WOMAD site and it’s also with Juldeh Camara, Justin’s recent collaborator – they put out the fabulous JuJu In Trance album and supported the BoJ on the UK dates October 2010.
I am VERY excited about this! We’re supposed to be going on holiday that week to the States, just need to break it to the missus that something more important has come up – wish me luck!
