TBL issue 39 Latest:

The forthcoming issue of the TBL magazine -issue 39 is now well under production – text and lay out design is full on at StudioMix in Bedford via designer Mick Lowe. I am aiming at a late June publication.

If you are a current TBL 2015 subscriber (for which you will have previously received issue 38 which commenced the current three issue subscription), you will automatically receive this new issue TBL 39 as soon as it’s published. TBL issue 40 due later in the year then concludes the subscription.

Dennis Sheehan 1947 -2015: RIP  

I was very sad to hear the news of the sudden passing of Dennis Sheehan on Tuesday aged 68. The long time tour manager of U2, Dennis also worked with Led Zeppelin during the 1975 to 1977 period. I last saw Dennis at the Barney Hoskyns Trampled Underfoot book launch at the Rough Trade East record shop in London on September 13th 2012. I was on a Q and A panel that night that included Barney, former Zep roadie Joe Jammer and Dennis. The photo here shows Joe Jammer myself and Dennis on the night. Dennis was fantastic company relaying many a humorous tale. RIP a great character and rock industry legend.

John Bonham on the occasion of his birthday:

Sunday May 31 marks the 67th birthday of John Bonham.

Over the past year the Led Zeppelin Reissue programme has only gone to heighten John’s s percussive contribution and lasting legacy – as Jimmy remarked ”Listening to John Bonham, well that always makes me simile…”

The listing below was compiled from a TBL online/magazine poll conducted a while back. It remains the definitive fans opinion of the percussive favourites of this much missed special musician. These 20 selections unanimously reflect the remarkable standards he set.  I’m sure I won’t be the only ones searching out these performances to play this weekend in celebration of the greatest drummer of all time.

Bonzo Birthday Bash2015:

The annual  Bonzo Bash John Bonham Tribute takes over the Bergen Performing Arts Center in Englewood, New Jersey on May 30. A special tribute show that was founded by Whitesnake’s ex-drummer, Brian Thomas Tichy in 2010, is hosting its fourth one this year. The event has been given the name Bonzo’s Birthday Bash this time, as opposed to the name that has been used for the past three years.

Led Zeppelin Themed Real Ale Festival:

A Led Zeppelin themed real ale festival will take place at Rocklands Social Club in headless Cross on June 12 and 13

There will be more than 25 real ales and ciders including 12 Zeppelin-themed beers, helping to raise funds for Redditch’s John Bonham statue.

Dave Lewis Diary Update:

Last Sunday night at fairly short notice, we decided to have a bit of an Earls Court 40th anniversary gathering. It was an opportunity to mark the completion of the book – beers were drunk, we had a fun guess the lyric pop quiz (Tom and Jackie won) and of course my fellow Bedford May 24 Earls Court attendees Tom and Phil shared our memories of that amazing May 24 show and we skyped Dec in Ireland. After watching the Earls Court DVD clips, we also turned it into had a bit of vinyl playlist party with my good friend Dave Collins bringing over a stack of his seven inch singles and album collection. Amongst the delights we grooved to on the old record player, were Episode Six’s version of Morning Dew, Canned Heat Lets Stick Together, Credence Clearwater Revival’s Up Around The Bend plus plenty of vintage soul and reggae including Chairman of The Board’s Give Me Just A Little More Time and Harry J All Stars Liquidator. Proceedings predictably went on into the early hours where David Bowie’s Hunky Dory album was one of the wind down playlist choices.

With the Five Glorious Nights proof copy unveiled on the night, I reflected on how all those years back I had handwritten the first TBL issue with it’s extensive Earls Court feature. Back then, I could never have envisaged that many years later, I’d have the privilege of compiling a high quality photo book on the subject. The pic shows the good lady Janet with the aforementioned fabled TBL issue 1 and me with the Five Glorious Nights proof copy. Then and now, the passion for this period in the Led Zeppelin saga remains very much the same…

All in all, it’s been hugely enjoyable to look back on this week of weeks all of 40 years ago and as the singer put it, it really does feel like a second but a lifetime ago.

After all the euphoria of the Earls Court 40th anniversary celebrations , I have to say I’ve been feeling somewhat exhausted this week. The focus has now switched firmly to producing TBL 39 as seen above – and that trend will continue into what is shaping up to be a very busy June. More on all that into next month.
