TBL issue 42 Latest:

TBL issue 42 is well and truly now out on the streets – all subscriptions and pre orders should have arrived in over 30 countries across the globe.

If you have yet to indulge – it’s essential Led Zep reading – and don’t just take my word for it – here’s some comments from satisfied readers…

Issue 42 once again proves that TBL is undoubtedly THE magazine for Led Zeppelin fans. TBL 42 is all killer and no filler. Every article is a gem.

Lots of talk on memorabilia and history of various aspects of the hobby, which to me is very much needed before knowledge is lost and forgotten. Thanks for the latest TBL 42 that dropped on my doormat already on Tuesday. As always, you had to put everything else aside for a few hours because of the new issue. And a good one once again I loved your story about co-operating with Jimmy and his team on the liner notes. And keeping it secret! There aren´t too many people around who can claim to have worked closely with Jimmy Page himself on a Led Zeppelin release.  The Paul Sheppard story was again very interesting it was nice to browse through the collector columns and especially Jimmy´s session singles story by Cliff Hilliard which was great.

It’s been another outpouring of TBL text that began to formulate way back in September last year. It’s always a vast undertaking commencing with  collating the features, writing copy and overseeing it, advising Mick Lowe on the design, proofing the text, ordering the stamps, labelling them all and stuffing magazines – right through to taking them to the post. A five month process from start to finish. It’s a great feeling knowing it’s finally all out there.

Paul Rodgers will hit the road this spring on the FREE Spirit Tour.

As the title suggests, this special May 2017 tour will see Paul perform strictly Free songs only and will culminate with an epic show at London’s Royal Albert Hall.

Tickets go on sale from Planet Rock Tickets at 9am on Friday 27th January.

Reflecting on the tour, Paul Rodgers said: “It was 50 years ago in 1967 when Paul Kossoff and I met and later formed Free. We first jammed together at the Fickle Pickle Blues Club in Finsbury Park, we wanted exactly that, to be free to play the music that we loved, blues and beyond. We knew we had something special between us when people told us that when we played time stood still. He brought in the rhythm section, Simon Kirke from his band The Black Cat Bones and found the advertisement at the Nags Head Battersea for a “Bass player ex-John Mayall looking for a gig” Andy Fraser.

“Not only was Koss the soul of the band, playing every note deeply…from his very soul he also had great organisational skills, everybody loved him and rightly so.

“The first song that Koss and I wrote together was “Moonshine”. I remember him playing the music and he asked if I could write the melody and lyrics. In fact it was that song we were playing when Alexis Corner walked in to our rehearsal and gave us the suggestion for a band name “Free At Last”.

“We went with just Free and I am still reeling from the memories.

“It was so inspirational playing Free material with Deborah Bonham’s band, led by guitarist Pete Bullick, when we played charity gigs to support Willows Animal Sanctuary and Assisted Therapy Unit, which my wife Cynthia and I plus Deborah Bonham and Pete Bullick are Patrons of, that I promised myself that someday we would tour the UK with this band. Well…that someday has come. Pete will be on guitar, Ian Rowley on bass, Rich Newman on drums and Gerard Louis “G” on keyboards. Special guest will be Deborah Bonham featured with a keyboardist.

“We are calling the tour “Free Spirit” and the back story is that two ponies were abandoned by their guardians on the Shetland Islands when concerned neighbours contacted Willows who agreed to rescue them. After a fourteen hour ferry ride the two arrived, one heavily pregnant and both full of worms. The drugs needed would most assuredly kill the unborn foal. However miracles do happen and a healthy foal was born christened “Free Spirit” by Willows. Which in turn inspired the name for the tour.

What better way to thank the fans for their years and years of devotion to Free than to do this ‘Free Spirit’ UK Tour”.

• The 2016 Classic Rock Awards, which featured Jimmy Page, will be shown on AXS TV on February 19. Page gave a short talk at the event before presenting an award to Jeff Beck.

• Robert Plant has been on holiday in Costa Rica. He was photographed arriving in the country on January 21. La Nación reports that Plant told an employee at the airport that he was tired. The publication says that last year Plant stayed in the country for 13 days near Manuel Antonio beach. Plant has shaved off his beard while on holiday, and posed for photos with two different fans.

• English singer and musician Seth Lakeman said in an interview with The Press published on January 27 that he plays viola on Robert Plant’s new album. “I’m working on something with Robert Plant at Real World studios, going through some stuff with him for his Strange Sensation band project,” he said. “This’ll be the first time I’ll have worked with him and I’m a massive fan. It’s an album project – I’ll be playing viola – but I wouldn’t say no to playing live with him.” Plant previously used Peter Gabriel’s Real World Studios for tour rehearsals in 2013, and for recording his 2014 album “lullaby and… The Ceaseless Roar.”

John Paul Jones

John Paul Jones’ new band Tres Coyotes: Jones (left), Magnus Lindberg, and Anssi Karttunen. (Savoy/Muriel von Braun​) John Paul Jones has a new band: Tres Coyotes. It’s an improvisational, instrumental project with Finnish composer and pianist Magnus Lindberg and Finnish cellist Anssi Karttunen. The band has a website, Facebook page, Twitter account, and logo.

The first performance by the band will take place on April 5 in Helsinki, Finland. The band’s website calls that show the “live debut,” so expect other shows to be announced. Want to get an idea of what the band will sound like? Here’s a video of Lindberg and Karttunen performing together back in 2012.

It seems this project has been in the works since 2015. The trio were photographed together backstage in Paris in December 2015, where Jones gave an interview alongside Karttunen. At the time we spotted that Karttunen’s biography on his manager’s website referred to an upcoming “special project with the Led Zeppelin legend John Paul Jones.” And a Facebook post published by Karttunen’s manager in December 2015 said “In the pipeline: Anssi Karttunen’s new trio with John Paul Jones and Magnus Lindberg – working title: Tres Coyotes.”

Upcoming events:

February 19 – The 2016 Classic Rock Awards, which featured Jimmy Page, will premiere on AXS TV.
March 10 – “Song To Song,” the Terrence Malik film featuring Robert Plant, will have its world premiere at SXSW in Austin, Texas. Also, the new Fairport Convention album 50:50@50, which features a 2014 performance by Robert Plant, is released.
March 17 – “Song To Song,” the Terrence Malik film featuring Robert Plant, is scheduled to be released in the US.
April 5 – John Paul Jones’ band Tres Coyotes will have their debut performance in Helsinki, Finland.
April 16 – John Paul Jones will perform at the PRÉSENCES électronique music festival in Paris as one half of the band Minibus Pimps.

John Wetton 1949 – 2017 RIP:

Very sad to hear the passing of John Wetton aged 67 – a great musician who graced King Crimson, UK and Asia to name but a few. I’ve always loved Asia’s Heat Of The Moment from the day it was released with that iconic line ”And now you find yourself in ’82 – The disco hot-spots hold no charm for you”…

Deke Leonard 1944 – 2017 RIP:  

It was also very sad to hear the passing of Deke Leonard aged 72. Best known of fronting 1970s Welsh band Man. He also enjoyed success with his band Iceberg. I vividly recall buying the Man Live at the Padgent Rooms Penarth album back in 1972 and the Christmas at the Patti double ten inch set a year later. A great band. RIP

Snapshot Listen:- How it sounds now… 

I have this on the 1975 World Tour vinyl double album and the When The Levee Breaks /World Tour ’75 CD set. I’ve always had a bit of affection for the World Tour bootleg – it was one of the first I got from the 1975 US tour – I purchased it on mail order in the autumn of 1975 and played it repeatedly!  It’s a fair to good audience recording but very lively.

Overall, this is an enjoyable performance even though Robert’s voice is still struggling. Sick Again really rocks while Over The Hills appears in a unique arrangement as Page’s guitar lead cuts out and Plant fills in as JPJ carries the rhythm. After ”The Rain Song, Robert lectures the crowd on the Mellotron: “It’s a very peculiar instrument because every time we take it somewhere, it goes out of tune. It’s built and comprises of tapes inside the box, and to simulate violins is not an easy job when you’re travelling to North America. In fact, we’re gonna try to simulate some Eastern violins now.” Kashmir is growing more powerful with each performance and is rapidly turning into one of the highlights of the show. No Quarter clocks in at 19 minutes and pleasingly so.

Moby Dick is now stretching to 25 minutes and Plant refers to  Bonzo as “Karen Carpenter”, a reference to a recent poll in Playboy magazine which placed Karen Carpenter as ‘Best Drummer’, above Bonzo. At the time Bonzo’s first hand response was captured in an interview with Lisa Robinson: “Karen Carpenter couldn’t last ten fucking minutes with a Zeppelin number!”

Dazed And Confused (only it’s third outing on the tour) includes a very delicate version of San Francisco and is now recapturing some of its former glories. Page’s solo on Stairway To Heaven is also developing a previously unknown intricacy. Instead of Communication Breakdown they throw in a ragged but welcomed version of Heartbreaker as a second encore.

“Montreal – you are the best! Maybe the snow has melted all around the hall.” is Plant’s parting comment.

They were on the up, and there were some great performances imminently ahead.

DL Diary Blog Update:

With Dec back staying with us for a few days, it’s been a full on week.

Firstly, after a visit to the Vinyl Barn, we had a very eventful day in London on our Wallbangers reunion annual day out. I saw this advert outside the London Palladium for the Led Zeppelin master tribute show happening on April 19.

It was great to bump into Ross Halfin in Reckless Records -he got in first in acquiring the only vinyl copy of Terry Reid’s The Other Side of the River which I’d been looking for– luckily I picked it up later in Fopp. Also in Reckless, I picked up a copy of the Early Days & Latter Days compilation in the slip case edition which I didn’t have.

In the same shop, I came across a Best Of Jose Feliciano CD and lo and behold, sleeve notes by my very good friend Dec who happened to be behind me! In between one or two public houses, later popped in Flashback Records in Islington.

The next day we recovered to pitch up for my very good friend Phil’s belated 60th birthday party. This was re-arranged from last November when Phil had to cancel due to illness.  The party was staged at our local The Fox And Hounds and it was an absolutely great night.

I’ve know Phil since he was 17 back in 1974 – I met Phil, Dec, Tom, Max etc at the same time. 42 years later, it was pretty life affirming to be in the same room celebrating this landmark birthday – the second of four -as after myself and Phil, Dec (March) and Tom (May) are next up to clock 60 years. Here’s a pic of the birthday boy with his wife Eileen,the good lady Janet, and brother Max.

Some shapes were thrown on the dance floor by your TBL editor as can be seen. Two consecutive nights out did of course take it’s toll – and Sunday it all caught up with me. As can be seen in the pic below – the party was well and truly over!

With Dec here until Thursday, on Tuesday we took the opportunity to get the bus over to Cambridge for some record shop visiting. I combined it with spreading the TBL word via the new TBL flyer. product placement was duly achieved in Black Barn Records, Fopp and Lost In Vinyl.

I have to say Black Barn Records has some amazing stock.  This is the store opened last year by lottery winner Adrian Bayford. He previously had a store in Haverhill. Along with a host of Star Wars memorabilia, the racks are choc full of rare and interesting LPs and singles -with many a rarity and foreign pressing to be seen.

The Led Zep section was well full of various pressings new and old. I managed to search out a mint Japanese pressing of Physical Graffiti for £25 and a Led Zep II Japanese pressing with obi another bargain at a mere £15. I also picked up a promo single on Immediate by The Nice and two early Marianne Faithful albums on Decca that have long been on my wants list. The Marianne Faithful  album which includes the Jackie De Shannon and Jimmy Page composition In My Time of Sorrow and Come My Way. Both mono pressings in gorgeous typical 60s period sleeves. these two albums were released simultaneously in April 1965 – the former to reflect her pop credentials, the latter her folk/rock style. A result indeed. Dec picked up the acclaimed on the No Hard Feelings album by New Street Adventure on the Acid Jazz label.

If you are in the Cambridge area, be sure to check Black Barn Records out – It’s a splendid shop.

Dec went back today (Thursday) – he will be here again at the end of March for his 60th birthday celebrations.

In between all this socialising and record buying, there has been plenty of TBL work going on – including the designing and printing of the new TBL flyer.
