Robert Plant’s Band Of Joy album made an excellent first week showing on the UK official album charts entering at  number 3 in the UK (the highest for a Plant album since Pictures At Eleven). In the United States it sold 49,000 copies in its first week of release to debut at position No. 5 on The Billboard 200 chart.  Black Country Communion’s album topped the UK’s Rock album chart in its first week  and also entered the national UK chart at 13.

Robert and The Band Of Joy have announced an extra European date -as part of the  AVO Session at the  Festsaal Messe in  Basel, Switzerland, on October 23rd.

Robert made a appearance on the UK’s Absolute Radio station last week. He gave an interesting and humorous  interview to DJ Geoff Lloyd. Among the topics discussed during the 15-minute interview were: Slade’s Noddy Holder, the Band of Joy album, his upcoming performance as part of the BBC Electric Proms at the Roundhouse in London, playing a gig on his wedding day, the music that influenced him as a young man and his honorary role as lifetime vice president of Wolverhampton Wanderers. You can watch the whole interview here:

Robert also appeared as a guest at a fundraising event at St Peter’s Church in Wolverhampton. Billed as An Evening with Edward Elgar, it  attracted a 400-strong crowd. The concert  featured the first-ever public performance of “He Banged the Leather for Goal”, the world’s first football chant penned in 1898 by Land of Hope and Glory composer Elgar in honour of Wolves defender Billy Malpass. Elgar regularly cycled to Wolves matches from his home in Great Malvern, Worcestershire.

Robert told the local press how Elgar had lifted his spirits in the past. “I’ve never thought about whether I’m a fan of Elgar, but he was part of a great movement of British composers,” he said. “It’s evocative music, really beautiful stuff. St Peter’s is a beautiful place, I haven’t been in here for probably 40 years. It’s great to see a public gathering like this.”

The Wolverhampton Symphony Orchestra performed Elgar’s famous Enigma Variations before St Peter’s Church Choirs gave their eagerly-awaited rendition of the brief Malpass chant. The concert was raising money to restore the church’s 150-year-old organ, which will cost in the region of  £300,000 to refurbish.

I just received my copy of LID #11 in the post. It’s done well and the interview with Jimmy is great. The photos are nicely presented and printed on quality paper (cardstock). Included, is one of my favorite photos of Jimmy, taken in Copenhagen on 28 February 1970, by Jorgen Angel. It’s an action shot very interesting play of light and motion. If you’re thinking about purchasing a copy I highly recommended it. Looking forward to seeing Jason’s Led Zeppelin Experience in Minneapolis on October 19th, my Zeppelin fantasy is that Jimmy, JPJ &/or Robert just happen to be in the northern United States and walk on a do a couple numbers…I know I’m a big dreamer.
