The Amphitéa 4000 is a fairly depressing out-of-town NEC like, but this was another memorable performance from the guys. It was quite a disappointing turn-out, too (about 2000). Did the promoters not know that local cult band Lojo (one of Justin Adams’ previous homes) were also in town that night? Some new songs compared to when I last saw them in Wolverhampton in December, and a good thing, too. Black Dog was performed with only a little enthusiasm by Robert, though the rest of the band were really into it.
Personal highlights were the acoustic interlude of Going to California and 29 Palms. The audience was rapt, and the quality of singing and playing was excellent. This was quickly followed up by a searing Tin Pan Valley and an arrangement of Gallows Pole familiar from the previous tour, but prefaced with Robert singing “Jailer, Won’t You Bring Me Some Water?” solo which was, frankly, beautiful. Despite what I took to be his apparent boredom with Black Dog, Whole Lotta Love was attacked with passion, and the familiar smiles from all involved on stage. The crowd, such as it was, went wild.
The sound was excellent for most of the performance, despite being in a venue that reminded me of the American Air Force Base in “Spinal Tap”. I lost count of the times Robert punished the mic stand, and the Eddie moment was, in fact, an Eddie moment. I had expected Johnny or Sasha, but there you go. Thank God for the Strange Sensations and Ryan-air!
