The Cirkus is a lovely venue and the place was pretty much packed to the hilt with seating section in back and a packed standing room floor in front of the stage. The opening act was a Swedish band called Kaipen(?) who did a decent job playing melodic pop/rock.

The lights when down at 20.30 and the band came on after the pre-recorded stuff and started off with “Win my train…” and the set list proceeded much like the Tampere show with the addition of “Freedom Fries/flies?”.

When Robert and the Sensation came on the crowd was supportive and I was struck by how good Roberts voice sounded even compared with the last time a few years back (something which lasted the whole show).

My general impression was that it was a fine show with Robert and the sensation in great form. However, as is always the case when legends showcase new material the crowd will wilt at times. Such was my impression this night. Still, a fine evening by one of rocks greatest voices and a surprisingly spunky band! Highlights for me were “Shine it all around”, Thats the way, Levee and BIGLY.

One note. Roberts last words to the audience: “Never trust a hippie”. I have no idea what he was referring to…!

A nearly full Cirkus in Stockholm (approx 1500) warmly greeted Robert Plant and the Strange Sensation as they took the stage. The area closest to the stage was surprisingly full of teenagers in Zeppelin T-shirts. As the new record is yet to be released in Sweden, not many, including myself, have had the opportunity of hearing the new material except for the single Shine it all around. Starting up with Win my train fare home which included snippets of That’s alright mama, the band really seemed to be in fine form and enjoying themselves. The sound was impeccable and Robert’s voice in very good shape. The new material sounded very good. Robert was giving a few plantations introducing new material by stating the album is doing very well in Russia and explaning that the hangman always wins.

As for the Zeppelin material, I really enjoyed the restructured versions of Heartbreaker and Black Dog. That’s the way and gallows pole were impeccably performed. When the levee breaks, including a full sing a long by the audience was fantastic! Robert Plant singing “mean old’ levee taught me to weep and” (enter audience) “MOAN!!!. A full combination of English folk music, country blues and Zeppelinesque power (and a little bit of audience participation). After that, the encore Babe I’m gonna leave you seemed a bit tired and not that inspirational. The Enchanter and a long Whole Lotta Love finished off a very very good concert.

“..And now it`s time for some psychedelic jazz” – That´s how Robert Plant once introduced “How many more times” in 1998. Well, it wasn`t back then, but last night at the Cirkus in Stockholm we were treated with more than that. Add organic african blues,folk and a lot of keyboards and you get the picture. This was the third time I have seen Robert (2001 and 2002 previously) and I must say it makes me happy to see him enjoying himself and still sounding good. With a nice red backdrop and two “discoballs” behind them the band started off with “Train Fare Home” sounding good and quickly revealed that Robert was in fine voice ( he was dressed in jeans and t-shirt).
Shine it all around followed but didn`t sound as heavy as on my stereo but it was tight and showed how eager Robert is to show the world music from “Mighty rearranger”. The zeppelinsongs played were all more or less rearranged (Robert the mighty rearranger haha – not funny) Both “Black dog” and “Heartbreaker” were uninteresting simply because the original riffs are so much better. “When the levee breaks” was fantastic with a clever invitation for the audience to sing the last word in each line. “Babe I`m gonna leave you” and “That`s the way were both beautiful with impressing guitarplaying from Skin.
The new material sounds interesting but demands further listening. Sometimes it`s just too much going on and I`m not impressed with Justin Adams – although his guitarplaying isn`t as bad as his dancing. Keyboards and drums were very good all evening,the bass a little too heavy. A very vital “Whole lotta love” with a bluesintroduction and long, crazy middlepart ended a very nice concert.
To wrap it all up: Robert Plant is not taking the easy way out and therefore he deserves respect. It doesn`t mean everything he is doing is good but it`s certainly better and always more interesting than ,let`s say, “Sir” Elton and “Sir Mick”. But we already knew that , didn`t we?
