“Welcome to Radio Cairo”, said Robert as he finished off the most kick-ass version of “No Quarter” I have heard. The feel on this tune is ‘simply groovy man’. The band sings great backup harmonies on the repetitive Chorus which is “They Choose the Path Where No One Goes”. Nice intonation here as well. Best harmonies yet in any of Robert Plant band line-ups. “No Quarter” worked well as the opener in this club for it only holds 897 people. The crowd was a bit more subdued than the two previous U.S. gigs this weekend. Perhaps the Monday night booking had something to do with that.

This was the third time I’ve seen and heard “Freedom Fries” live and it kicks ass more and more each time. Whoever wrote the riff and figured out the timing on this one deserves kudos indeed. What a great feel. Check out the drums on this track….Wow! (Can’t yet get all the lyrics but it’s got great emotion when Robert lets loose with “A promised land is a Promised HELL!”) Nice leads by Skin on this tune and the keyboard sounds are very hip as well. Most noticeably however are John Baggot’s solos on “Morning Dew” which followed. He plays fluidly and fits counter-rhythms in so gracefully during his solos.

The freshly arranged version of Black Dog continues to go over well, with Robert holding out the mic for the crowd to finish his ‘Ah-Ahs’. The new single “Shine it All Around” must have been played a lot on Dallas rock radio recently as I saw a lot of folks singing along with this tonight. “Tin Pan Valley” is growing on this writer as well. The keyboard sampling is great and the rocking chorus is so powerful, “LIKE THIS”, “LIKE THIS” ! Preceding “Tall Cool One”, Robert urges the audience to go out and pick up a copy of Blind Lemon Jefferson’s “Matchbox”, and he dedicates the use of ‘innuendo’ to him. Again the guitar duels are superb, Justin and Skin were equal in sound level tonight, the onstage play back and forth is great to witness from the audience. Skin plays a great riff on “Levee” and towards the end of song, Justin Adams trades in his mandolin for a Les paul and proceeds to play the most kick ass solo fo the night. What energy in this guy!

The encore was the same as the previous two gigs and “The Enchanter” is a standout number from the new album. The only disappointment tonight was the lack of the title track from “Mighty Rearranger” (Robert played such a great bluesy harmonica solo on this last night) as well as the absence “All The kings Horses” which is such a great tune.
Thanks Robert and Strange Sensation for bringing these new tunes out with such gusto and with no compromises. The new sound is welcome and refreshing!
