Last night’s show was really good! Even nicer since I was able to sneak down into section A and got into the hospitality section for some free beers! Robert was really into it, dancing around, happy and his voice was in fine form. I think he is learning to stay in his range and not overextend so he sounds better now than in recent years. He even played a bit of hand drums. He really nailed some of the higher notes which was pretty sweet. This was the last show on the tour so I think everyone gave a little bit more. Robert mentioned that famous bootleg Listen to this Eddie and also gave a mention to Miss Pamela. Her husband was in the crowd, apparently. The drummer couldn’t really hit some songs including Black Dog though, but then again, its hard to live up to one of the best ever. The rest of the band was very solid as far as I could tell. They changed the Black Dog riff a little bit though, so that was kind of strange. The new songs sounded really great live.. much fuller than on the disc, especially Tin Pan Valley.

Gallows Pole had quite a different arrangement, but it sounded really great. Darkness, Darkness had some very smooth vocals. Hey Hey What Can I do was complete with mandolin and I had a flashback of Page/Crowes several years ago; it was really sweet. But perhaps the most beautiful song of the night was That’s the Way; it sounded really full with this band for sure! When the Levee Breaks started off quiet and slow and then built up into a thunderous monster, it was awesome!

The last song was pretty huge, everyone was going nuts and Robert nailed the scream. They even took a picture of the crowd as a memento for the band since it was the end of the tour. Looks like they will be back in October.. It should be another good one (since he seems to love LA); hopefully the show is changed up a bit though and longer. I think they could have done another 2-3 songs, easily.

Shine It All Around – wonderful
Black Dog – like this version, great audience call and response, especially with one of the largest audiences on the current US tour
Freedom Fries – got to hear this live for the first time, and I like it.
Darkness Darkness – good
That’s The Way – lose the keyboards…keep it acoustic
Hey Hey What Can I Do – Fantastic!!!
Tin Pan Valley – Good. Not enamored with this like others seem to be
Four Sticks – good
Another Tribe – Surprise! While I enjoyed hearing this live for the first time, I wish it wasn’t at the expense of Mighty Rearranger.

Robert didn’t seem to be as chatty last night as he was when I saw him in Phoenix. It was all business, and again, the Sensations performed a strong show. Glad to have heard two new Rearranger tracks for the first time: Freedom Fries and Another Tribe (Robert, you must have read my 7/15 Phoenix review!!!)

Look forward to the Wiltern shows this fall!

A balmy night in woodsy Griffith Park — a great little breeze to cool off the atrocious heat of day, it was the perfect setting for those rolling African drum beats that began an almost 2 hour set of re-imagined old, but far too few new RP solo songs. There’s no arguing with an audience that erupts into wildly enthusiastic and emotional displays when they hear the first strains of an old favorite — it’s great — definitely the electric jolt we all pray for — but dude, we don’t have all night!

We have a small sliver of time — and what huge thrill to hear him wailing “like this” from Tin Pan Valley — because we haven’t heard it live before. Or how great was The Enchanter or the opening re-mix of Shine It All Around. There’s just nothing like hearing a live version of something you only know in its tidy-chiseled-in-CD form.

Of course we love it when the levee breaks — who could ever not want to hear No Quarter, it’s been brilliant in all it’s many guises, but is there any way we could send a collective mind-meld message and tell our Percy it’s o.k. to show up with just his stuff?

Anyway, the LA Times gave the show the rave review it deserved and lauded his efforts to keep the Zep flame burning bright — the audience loved every morsel of the tweaked universe of music he gave us. As for me, if I ever get lucky and manage to get tickets to his October LA gig, I’ll be hoping he opts for the alternate reality.
