I was lucky enough to be in Nice for the gig and rather than go into the detail of the set list etc, there are (for me) some interesting things to note after 8 previous RP and the SS gigs:

Planty seems to be having a great time with this band. There were lots of laughs, knowing looks, and great Plantations inbetween songs and even during a few songs as well. The French crowd were really up for this and were starting to get a bit impatient just before the band came on. I was really surprised at the make up of the audience; we had a couple of 16 year old kids standing behind us, there were parents/kids, a load of ex-pats kicking around as well as the usual middle-aged lot that have been through Zeppelin, Page & Plant, and various Planty incarnations (I include myself in the latter). Quite a collection, but then I haven’t experienced RP and SS outside of the US and UK before. The reception from the audience was excellent, although they didn’t understand just exactly when they were meant to join in on Black Dog and Going to California and I wonder how many actually understood the ‘Listen to this Eddie’ comment that seems to be a permanent line now……?

Mr P said near the end that he now feels he’s again just the singer in the band and he could take his name off the front. I, for one, took this as a compliment to the rest of SS, and I personally think he’s right. I now think some of the reworked Zep classics can be dropped from the set list and replaced with their own songs (and I do know Dreamland was basically a covers album) as they stand up in their own right (although I really like the arrangement for Black Dog).

All in all, a good gig. Not great, but good enough to satisfy the trip.
I’m going to both the Wolverhampton gigs, and after this I’m really looking forward to them.
