The DL receding hairline clearly visible just under the mic stand. Later With Jools Holland November 16th 2010
Last Sunday morning I watched BBC1’s live coverage of the service of Remembrance from the Cenotaph in Whitehall. It was an incredibly moving experience to see all the veteran soldiers marching by – made even more so with thoughts of Janet’s Dad Ken who died in April and was so proud to have served his country in the second world war. With thoughts of Ken in mind and my own departed Mum and …

The Robert Plant series of programmes aired on BBC2 last night offered a feast of visual delights that spread into the early hours of the morning.
The newly commissioned documentary Robert Plant By Myself proved to be a compelling study of his life in music. Mark Radcliffe’s commentary was concise and to the point, leaving Robert to chronicle his remarkable journey through a series of perceptive interview segments told with his usual integrity and wit.
The documentary began with a scene setting focus on Robert’s early musical inspirations and …

The evening was opened by Justin Adams and Juldeh Camara doing … well I’m not sure how or even if it should be described, but it becomes kinda groovy after a while – an almost-endless succession of bluesy riffs overlain with homemade banjos and fiddles (Justin Adams description, not mine!) With the arrival of the Band of Joy onstage, the evening becomes the same voice but a different artist. This is so different from the …

I have to admit that whilst I was looking forward to this, I was equally apprehensive, because to be honest Raising Sand, whilst good, wasn’t perhaps quite as good as the media made out at the time. I’ve always thought it slightly ironic that the best track on the CD was an old(ish) Page and Plant song!
On the other hand however Band of Joy is an excellent album, to my ears considerably better and more varied than Raising Sand, and this gig too was a delight. A lovely intimate …
