John Paul Jones made a triumphant return to the scene of one of Led Zeppelin’s greatest performances as Them Crooked Vultures stormed the Royal Albert Hall in London last night.
Patron of the Teenage Cancer Trust Roger Daltrey set the tone for this tenth series of admirable shows with an impassioned speech regarding the charity’s achievements over the past decade. Acknowledging the musical feast ahead he commented ‘’I know Them Crooked Vultures are going to be great with somebody who was once in Nirvana and John Paul Jones who everyone knows …

Next Monday night Them Crooked Vultures will be performing the opening show of the 2010 Teenage Cancer Trust series of concerts at the Royal Albert Hall. The TBL Crew plan to be in attendance for a pre gig meet. We will be in The Queens Arms pub in Queens Gate Mews, (the same venue as the pre gig meets for Roberts Teenage Cancer Trust show in 2005 and the Page/Plant/Weller Teenage Cancer Trust show in 2002) from around 5pm onwards and look forward to seeing all those that can make it along. This excellent …

It’s one of those periods where the best strategy of attack is, as my old boss used to say to J.F.D.I (that stands for Just F***ing Do It!), with much to get sorted in the next few weeks.
The Who Live At Leeds feature has been dominating a fair few waking hours here and it’s been enlightening to investigate in the nooks and crannies of The Who’s career circa ‘69/’70. It’s led me to search out some great Who live stuff which aside from the obvious Leeds recordings, has included a …

For once the spotlight has been away from Zeppelin slightly here, as I got down to initial research for the feature I am collating to mark the 40th anniversary of the Who’s Live At Leeds album. It’s already turning out to be some story –I spoke with one of the Ents committee members at Leeds University who was involved in organizing the gigs there in the 1970s including the historic Who show on Valentines Day all of 40 years ago. He had some great tales from the times including seeing …

‘’January is a 31 day hangover but February brings lambs, daffodils and the air fills with a magical quickening that tells you spring is on the way.
”February is short so whatever you’re trying to stretch, whether it’s your salary, your calorie intake or your booze units, February’s unique compactness helps you spread it just that little bit thicker. A good enough reason to raise a glass”.
Reason enough …

This piece first appeared in TBL 16. It’s my account of one of the most beguiling nights spent in the company of Jimmy Page and Robert Plant.
This was the occasion they chose to appear separately on the same bill at one of the series of Teenage Cancer Fund shows in 2002. Looking back I think there was a sense amongst fans that they could still easily pick up their collaboration of the mid to late 1990’s – but by then things had moved on, particularly for Robert. It’s interesting …
