Led Zeppelin Then As it Was – At Knebworth 1979 Book Launch at London Olympia November 16th and 17th – TBL Competition to win 2 pairs of Guest Passes

As previously mentioned my  long awaited new book Led Zeppelin Then As It Was –At Knebworth 1979 will be officially launched at the VIP Musicmania Fair at London’s Olympia on Saturday November 16th /Sunday November 17th.

The good folks at organisers VIP Fairs have provided two pairs of guest free passes for the event for a TBL competition.

All you have to do is answer correctly the following question.

What song did Led Zeppelin open their set with at both the Knebworth concerts?

E-mail your answers to davelewis.tbl1@ntlworld.com

The first two all correct answers picked out will win a pair of guest passes for free entry to the VIP MusicMania Fair at London’s Olympia 2 Hall, Hammersmith Road London N14. Winners have a preference of attending either Saturday or Sunday. Closing date for entries is Tuesday November 12th. Winners will be notified by e-mail Wednesday November 13th.

The Musicmania Fair is the largest Record/CD/Book and memorabilia gathering in the UK. Staged over two days it draws buyers and traders from America, Australia, Japan and the UK to London’s Olympia exhibition hall. Entry is £5 – there’s always an array of  rare Zep stuff to check out amongst countless other artists. It’s a really great day out.

Saturday runs from 10am to 5pm

Sunday 10am to 3.30pm

I will be in attendance over the two days signing copies of the book from the TBL stall. A variety of Tight But Loose products, and the new issue of the Tight But Loose Led Zeppelin magazine will also be available. I look forward to seeing all who can make it along. I’ll also be having a beer or two afterwards and  again look forward to welcoming all who can join me (pub details to follow).

Note: If you have already pre ordered a book and plan attending either of the Olympia Fair launch days – I can reserve your book for you to collect. Just send an email to me so I can arrange collection.

For venue and Musicmania Fair details visit  http://www.vip-24.com/olympia.htm

I’ve had a few purchasers of the first edition ask me what is different about this book from the first edition  -and if is it worth re investing – the easy answer is quite a lot!

Here’s a summary of the additional content:

John Paul Jones Debuts New Manson Triple Neck at 10th Anniversary Lunel Festival

Some inside info on the latest addition to the John Paul Jones  guitar collection –via the official Manson website:

World-renown musician and long term Manson Guitars user John Paul Jones famed for his legendary performances and song-writing skills with Led Zeppelin, Them Crooked Vultures and as a contributor with hundreds of stellar artists, debuted his latest Hugh Manson triple neck creation at the 10th Anniversary of The Lunel Mandolin Festival on Sunday 3rd November. Painstakingly built over several months, the stunning multi-neck would pose a challenge as a fixed body instrument for many luthiers but Hugh’s experience in multi neck instruments came to the fore whilst developing the Mandolin, Octave Mandolin and Bass Mandolin set-up.

Hats off To Hats Off….

This story via the Redditch Standard:

A Led Zeppelin tribute band are backing a campaign to erect a statue in memory of John Bonham in Redditch.

Hats off to Led Zeppelin will be holding a collection at their Birmingham New Alexandra Theatre show to raise money for the John Bonham Memorial Fund. The fund was set up by Redditch couple Sam and Clem Dallaway who wanted a designated space within the town centre to honour the drummer who passed away in 1980, following a day of heavy drinking.

Bonham was born in the borough on May 31, 1948 and the family lived in Hunt End. At the age of 11 he attended Lodge Park County Secondary School before leaving in 1964. His sister Deborah still returns to the town to visit family.

Kevin Oliver Jones, bassist and John Paul Jones in the band, said: “It’s a no brainer really. We will have a packed out concert full of Led Zeppelin fans not far from his home town, so it just made sense.

“We want to make a big deal out of it as the fans will recognised how important this is and we just want to help in anyway we can.

“It’s not just about the Birmingham show, but we go up and down the country seeing thousands of Led Zeppelin fans, so hopefully it will spread the word.”

“They are clearly the best band in the world and it’s long overdue.”

The band, which are the official UK number one Led Zeppelin tribute act, are set to play on Thursday, November 19.

A unique electric guitar of Mark B. B. King Lucille which 2004 was signed by B. B. King and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin is now up for auction. On World Diabetes Day November 14 in Stockholm, Sweden, the guitar is set to be auctioned off to raise money for child diabetes research.

The auction is a collaboration between Swedish Child Diabetes Foundation, Stockholm’s Auktionsverk and Lilly Diabetes.

B.B. King and Jimmy Page signed guitar is up for charity auction

The guitar is signed by B. B. King and Jimmy Page from Led Zeppelin, and is one among a number of exclusive items, for an example fashion accessories and art. The auction will be held at the restaurant Berns in Stockholm, and all items can be seen at www.auktionsverket.com from November 1. All revenues from the auction will be donated to Type 1 diabetes research.

World Diabetes Day (WDD) is celebrated every year on November 14. It engages millions of people worldwide in diabetes advocacy and awareness.

Type 1 diabetes (or juvenile onset diabetes) means that the body produce very little or no insulin. It usually debuts in children or young adults, however the causes of juvenile diabetes are not yet fully understood. Therefore additional fundings are needed in order to make important breakthroughs in curing the disease.

Bobby Parker 1937 – 2013:

Sad to hear the passing of Bobby Parker – his excellent 1961 hit Watch Your Step was rehearsed by Zep in their early days -the riff of which has a close resemblance to Moby Dick (seeYouTube clip below)

Here’s the story via the Washington Post:

Bobby Parker, a soul-blues singer and guitarist whose recordings from the late 1950s and 1960s — notably the propulsive groove of “Watch Your Step” — influenced performers as varied as John Lennon, Carlos Santana and the band Led Zeppelin, died Oct. 31 at an emergency care facility in Bowie, Md. He was 76 and lived in Temple Hills, Md.

Buy a London Record Store on EBay:

Plenty of coverage for this story this week:

The owner of a landmark London record shop has put it up for sale via eBay at a Buy It Now price of £300,000 – but he’s warned those interested not to expect a financial return.

Tim Derbyshire opened On The Beat Records in 1979, but says the collectable-vinyl business will close if no new owner is found.

In the auction listing he explains: “If you’re at the stage in your life where you don’t have to worry about making money, but can live a bohemian life, meet interesting people every day and the occasional rock star, here’s your chance to take over the oldest record shop in Swinging London.

“I’ve given it my heart and soul for all these years but it’s time for me to step down and let another passionate music lover take over. You can make history.

“If you’re mad about music, love vinyl and want to keep the dream alive, here’s your chance to take on an Aladdin’s cave of musical gems. The Beat must go on – keep my dream alive!”

Four offers have so far been made for On The Beat Records, which is on sale as a going concern with all stock. The auction closes on November 25.

This a shop I know very well –it was originally called Luigi And The Boys and then Vinyl Experience – I’ve purchased a fair few rarities over the years from there– I remember being dispatched via the Swan Song office in 1980 at the request of Jimmy Page to go and purchase the  Knebworth Fair Vol 1 and 2 albums at the store, as it was one of the few bootleg stockist. It was also where I purchased a very dodgy copy of The Song Remains The Same movie on VHS back in 1981 –long before it officially came out. It’s always a store I pop in to when I am in town – it’s literally crammed with all manner of rare items.

In my dreams here’s the scene yesterday in the shop…

DL in on the beat

…But Janet it’s only £300,000!

Record Collector -The making of Paul McCartney & Wings Band On The Run:

rec collector wings

The new issue of Record Collector has my feature on the Paul McCartney and Wings Band On The Run album which I somehow concocted in between work on the Knebworth book and TBL 36 in late summer – great album it is too and thanks to Paul Humbley for his help on this. It’s rumoured that John Bonham played on an outtake of a Wings single in 1972  – all this and much more on the making of a classic album 40 years ago in the new issue of Record Collector on sale now…

Gary Foy :

Unfortunately Gary had to go back to hospital this week for an operation to remove his gall bladder. Once again I know I speak for everyone, on wishing him a speedy recovery -get well soon mate…

DL Diary Update:

A lot going on here right now with the impending biggest distribution challenge I’ve faced with both the Knebworth book and TBL 36 due very soon. I’ve gearing up here with the ordering of envelopes and packing plus the ordering of a mountain of stamps in preparation for the task ahead. It’s at that nervy stage before the product arrives and it’s all a bit edgy.

On the playlist therefore some soothing ambiance and none more than the plaintive tones of Joni Mitchell. In celebration of her 70th birthday this week and inspired by a great cover feature in this month’s Uncut, I’ve been wading through her early albums with the David Crosby produced debut Song To A Seagull, Clouds, Ladies Of The Canyon, Blue, Court And Spark, The Hissing Of Summer Lawns and Hejira  providing a calming influence amongst the chaos here. I may liven things up slightly with a touch of Elvis as this Friday sees the screening of ITV’s The Nation’s Favourite Elvis Song. That could be an interesting one – my own personal top five would line up as follows:

1: Kentucky Rain

2 I’ve Lost You

3 You Were Always On My Mind

4 Can’t Help Falling In Love (live Aloha from Hawaii)

5 Don’t Be Cruel

I’m very partial to the latter era Elvis when he sang with such poignancy and conviction.

The good lady and I may even nip over to the local White Horse to see the Elvis tribute act appearing on Saturday night. You gotta love The King because before anyone did anything – Elvis did everything…
