Robert Plant and The Sensational Space Shifters kick off their 2013 campaign with an appearance at the Timbre Rock & Roots Festival on March 21st, that’s if he can get though immigration of course. Robert and members of Led Zeppelin were famously refused entry in to the country twice back in the 1970’s. Asked about the incidents in a recent telephone interview for Life!, Robert said “Oh, I can remember a few things. I can tell you I definitely remember having long hair and somehow I still do,” he says dryly. “So I think they must have had a change of heart. But we tried to get into Singapore twice and we couldn’t get beyond the immigration desk, they just turned us back. So yeah it was a different place then I guess.”
After Singapore, Robert and The Sensational Space Shifters head on over to Australasia for nine dates that include appearances in Tasmania and New Zealand also. These will mark the first tour in the area since Page and Plants 1996 tour.

PATTY GRIFFIN TO RELEASE NEW ALBUM, AMERICAN KID, ON MAY 7:

Patty-Griffin

New West Records is proud to announce that Patty Griffin will release her new album, American Kid, on May 7. The album, co-produced by Griffin and Craig Ross, is her seventh and first for New West. It is her first album of mainly new material since the acclaimed Children Running Through in 2007. In between then and now, she made the Grammy Award-winning Downtown Church in 2010 and became a member of Band of Joy alongside Robert Plant.

American Kid, much of which Griffin says “was written to honor my father,” returns to typical Patty Griffin territory, which is to say that it features a group of remarkably powerful, personal and unpredictable songs arranged and performed in a style that doesn’t entirely repeat anything she’s done on her previous albums while drawing on all of them. Yet Griffin’s catalog is among the most unified in modern popular music, because her singing is as unmistakable and inimitable as her songwriting.

Griffin has lived in Austin and recorded either in Austin and Nashville throughout her career (she released her first album, Living with Ghosts, in 1996) but American Kid is her first album whose music sounds stylistically rooted in Americana.  “It was recorded in Memphis,” Griffin says, and adds with a quick laugh, “Part of the reason was the chance to get away from what I’d been doing.” The key to that was working with North Mississippi Allstars guitarist Luther Dickinson and drummer Cody Dickinson. The Dickinsons had played acoustic sets opening for Band of Joy and Luther gave Patty lessons on mandolin. “With the Dickinsons, you’re constantly seeing people who work to get away from what they’re used to.”

Co-producer Ross, perhaps best known for his guitar work with Lisa Germano as well as his own critically acclaimed solo albums, is also responsible for the production of an earlier Griffin collection (2004’s Impossible Dream).  Griffin said she chose Ross because of his ability, as she describes it, “to get the ghost out of the machine.”  Ross plays — usually guitar but also bass, mandolin, baritone, omnichord and organ — on all but two tracks on the album. The other prominent musical contributor, appearing on eight of the twelve tracks, is guitarist Doug Lancio, who has played on just about every Patty Griffin recording since Flaming Red, and produced some of them. Long-time friend and sound engineer, Roy Taylor helps out once again on American Kid, and Plant sings on three songs.

The album’s lyrical focal point is Patty’s father, a high school science teacher who fought in World War II, lost his father young and his mother almost immediately after he returned from the war, lived for a time in a Trappist monastery, raised seven children, bought Patty’s Sgt. Pepper for her birthday and changed her life. Mr. Griffin’s impending death sparked the songs. But these aren’t songs about death, even though American Kid features ample reference to mortality. American Kid is thematic, not a concept album.

Robert backs The Bell:

Robert Plant has also thrown his support behind a campaign to save a Bath pub from closure. the Bell Community Buyout, which is attempting to raise money to rescue the Bath, UK venue called the Bell that is under the threat of closure. The public is being encouraged to buy shares ranging from £500 to £20,000 to help the venue remain open.
“For the last ten years or so many of my musical adventures have been with friends from Bristol and Bath, so I’m fully aware of the Bell and its legacy and its contribution to the musicians and audience in the surrounding area,” Plant says.
“To me, the Bell is a crucial and integral venue and a great window into the world of music and entertainment in the West Country.”

Robert Plant major biography due:

The books keep on coming…this report via The Bookseller:

HarperCollins has signed world rights for a major new biography of rock star Robert Plant.

Robert Plant: A Life is written by former Q and Kerrang! editor Paul Rees, and is based on in-depth interviews with those closest to to the Led Zeppelin frontman as well as access to the singer himself.

Natalie Jerome, publishing director at Harper Non-Fiction UK, and Denise Oswald, senior editor for It Books/HarperCollins US, bought the rights from Matthew Hamilton at Aitken Alexander and Matthew Elblonk at DeFiore and Company. The book will be released in the UK in October 2013, and appear in the US in January 2014.

It will follow Plant’s career from early folk gigs in the 1960s in the Black Country, to his globe-spanning success with rock pioneers Led Zeppelin, as well as his recent Grammy-winning career working alongside bluegrass singer Alison Krauss.

Jerome said: “Robert Plant¹s stature as one of the greatest frontmen of all time is without question and as fans of his music from Led Zep to present, we have long wanted to publish his story. This book is as close to Plant telling his own story in his own words as we’ve seen or heard to date.

Joe Bonamassa – states no more BCC for him…

This report via Classic Rock:

Black Country Communion guitarist Joe Bonamassa admits he became disillusioned with the band during their 2011 tour.

He says he’s “happily not involved any more” with the supergroup, months after a public spat with frontman Glenn Hughes came close to derailing the release of third album Afterglow.

The musicians fell out after Hughes expressed his frustration that Bonamassa wouldn’t go on the road to support the record with live shows – one of a series of outbursts that led to the cancellation of a one-off concert in the UK planned for January.

Now the blues guitarist tells PremierGuitar: “As far as I’m concerned my involvement is pretty much done.

“Originally I did it for the same reasons I did the stuff with Beth Hart and Rock Candy Funk Party: it was an excessive to play a different kind of music that I don’t get to play normally.

“So I did it and did a nine-week tour in 2011 that really, by the end of it, wasn’t fun for me. It wasn’t because I didn’t like the cats in the band, but it was just too much – too much involved in getting people from place to place and getting the band onstage.

“Everybody seemed to be very tense, and it made my crew very tense, and it’s not the way I like to tour. I run a family. I have 21 people who go on the road with me all the time, and if you asked them who was the cause of the least of their problems, they would say me.”

But Bonamassa remains proud of his work with the band, also featuring Jason Bonham, Derek Sherinian and producer Kevin Shirley.

“The first two records were a blast,” he says. “The band is fantastic when the Ritalin kicks in, the ADD goes away, and everyone’s focused. It’s a devastatingly good rock band of the early-1970s type, and Glenn is a fantastic singer – just one of the best ever.

“It just wasn’t fun for me any more. All the stuff that Glenn says in the media, essentially pinning it on me, that I was the reason for the band’s lack of touring and the band’s lack of future. It became rapidly not fun at all. It would be dishonest of me to get onstage and pretend like I’m having fun to please the band.”

He’s previously given his blessing for BCC to continue without him, a move that both Hughes and Bonham have hinted at in the past. “I’m just not the guitar player for that band,” he says. “Unfortunately, there doesn’t seem to be any out-of-work guitar players in LA that they can get. There are so many guys that can fill that role and I would be the first guy to queue up and buy a ticket.

“I’m happily not involved any more – but I’m happy with the legacy that I left with that band and happy with the records we made. It was a great three years for me.”

There have been plenty of rumours as to who might replace Joe…but with Glenn Hughes rumoured to have his own new project ready to go at some point this year –it would seem BCC may well have run its course.

DL Dairy:

It’s been very full on here with the revised updated Knebworth book project. There is a long long way to go with this as it’s a mammoth redesign task for Mick  and a whole lot of collation going on plus the input of 30,000 words of new text. We have worked up a cover design and here is a preview of a work in pogress version:

Then as it was preview 1

There really is some amazing new material and even if you purchased the first edition of the Knebworth book you will find much to enjoy in this revised edition. This project has all the makings of an epic –as I say it’s a fair way to go yet and there’s also the matter of the next TBL issue to get underway and various other plates to spin here ..but I have a good feeling that the revised and updated Led Zeppelin Then As It Was – At Knebworth 1979 is going to be something very special  – you can pre order the book at this link – all orders logged as received for the lowest number in the individually numbered limited edition .

Here’s the link:

I’ll keep you updated with the progress on this as it unfolds.

On the playlist – plenty of Bowie the week of the release of his new album, Meridian 1970, a great CD compilation of stuff from that year, Free, Nick Drake, etc, and on the morning car run on cassette it’s been Led Zep Boxed Set 2 with Down By The Seaside, Carouselambra and Out On The Tiles sounding mighty fine…

So imagine waking up and seeing these headlines in the music papers…that was the incredibly exciting prospect in store some 38 years ago this week.

For it was on this day March 15th 1975 that my good friend Dec made the trip to Earls Court in the early hours to get in line for tickets. I was working that day so Dec got the gig and did a very admirable job securing us second row tickets for the Saturday May 24th date. I had sent postal orders off for the May 23rd and 25th…alas they came back as ‘sold out’ even though I’d been quick on the mark. So plan B had to go into operation and after scouring the small ads in Sounds, in early April (and yes ‘’it was an April morning when they told us we should go’’) we made a trip on a Saturday morning to a flat in Willesden to make a connection with a guy who was selling tickets for all nights –double the price which was a bargain really as I was more than happy to pay £2 to see Led Zeppelin at Earls Court….

You could have invested in a fair few Earls Court tickets  at the time for the cost of the new Godfather box set Studio Magik Session 1968 – 1970– this mammoth 18 CD set attempts to gather every outtake remnant of Zep outtake and studio session that has surfaced on bootleg over the years. I’m pleased to say that one of these beauty’s resides in the corner of the TBL work station – not that I have had time to unwarp it yet….and the challenge ahead is that I need to find 20 hours in my schedule to wade through it all  …can’t see me doing that all at once of course but I do intend to analyse it thoroughly for coverage in the next TBL magazine.

Above: Amongst the Knebworth book research at the TBL work station – the Studio Magik box set awaits 20 hours listening time…

Shame Spurs let Liverpool back in the game last week to lose 3-2. Last night in the Europa League they just scraped through on away goals after blowing the first leg 3-0 lead against Inter Milan. It was torture keeping up with that one! Fulham await on Sunday and three points will be required.

Loving BBC4’s  Totally British Rock’nRoll programmes – Part One 1970 – 1974  was superb last week, as was the Mott The Hoople documentary. There’s another round of Totally British Rock’n’ Roll tonight  spanning 1975 – 1979 plus a Garham Parker doc and the excellent Oil City Confidential documentary on Dr Feelgood featuring of course Wilco Johnson – Jimmy Page was at one of his Koko Camden shows last week. Here’s a pic via the Blockheads Facebook  of Jimmy with Wilko and Blockheads bassist Norman Watt Roy.

Finally….

Here’s some newly surfaced footage from the Zep July 23 1977 Oakland Day On The Green show. A lot of crowd shots and some Zep on stage – you certainly get the vibe of this big outdoor event which was their penultimate US gig.

Until next time…

Have a great weekend

Keep listening, keep reading…
