John Paul Jones on stage with Jeff Tweedy and Wilco at the Todas Santos Music Festival in Mexico::
John Paul Jones was on stage on January 16 with Jeff Tweedy and Wilco, at the Todos Santos Music Festival, in Todos Santos, BCS, Mexico.
John played mandolin, bass guitar and keyboards on his mini three-song set, which included the Tweedy song World Away, a cover of the 1969 Neil Young song The Losing End (When You’re On), and the Wilco song Airline to Heaven. he also contributed to other performances notably the David Bowie tributes The Jean Genie ( see YouTube clip below) and All the Young Dudes.
Proceeds from the festival benefit the Palapa Society of Todos Society A.C.

Vinyl – HBO TV Series:

The new issue of Entertainment Weekly magazine has a story about a new HBO television series called Vinyl, which is about a fictitious record label in the 1970s. It’s based on an idea by Mick Jagger, who is one of the producers, and the first episode is directed by executive producer Martin Scorsese. According to the article, the series will feature a mixture of made-up rock stars and depictions of real ones – Zebedee Row plays Robert Plant and Ian Hart plays Led Zeppelin manager Peter Grant. The show airs on Feb. 14 on HBO.

- John Paul Jones made an unscheduled appearance at the Todos Santos Music Festival in Mexico on January 16. He took part in several performances, including sets by artists such as R.E.M. guitarist Peter Buck and Wilco singer Jeff Tweedy. Watch a short video of Jones performing with Jeff Tweedy here. Jones also posed for a couple of photographs with fans.

More Sad Passings:
Giorgio Gomelsky 1934 – 2016:
Sad to hear the passing of Giorgio Gomelskey – a key figure in the development of the 1960s UK R and B scene and manager of The Yardbirds from 1964 – 1966.
This via Classic Rock:
Music producer Giorgio Gomelsky has died aged 81.
His long-term partner Janice Daley told the New York Times that he’d passed away due to complications of colon cancer.
A prominent figure in London’s music scene in the early 60s, Gomelsky managed the Yardbirds and pioneered many other artists in his career including Soft Machine, Gong and Magma.
He opened London club Crawdaddy in 1963 and booked the Rolling Stones for their first paid shows. He also founded record label Marmalade and produced Soft Machine’s first demos.
He’s credited with organising the UK’s first blues festival in Birmingham – with a list of acts that included the Yardbirds, the Spencer Davis Group and Long John Baldry’s Hoochie Coochie Men with Rod Stewart.
He relocated to New York in 1978 and turned his townhouse into a recording space for bands such as Bad Brains, Richard Hell and John Zorn.
In a 2000 interview with author Richie Unterberger, Gomelsky said: “My mission was to innovate, to push envelopes, to get a new thing established, to allow the underdog, the underground, to come forward and up.
“I had no presumption, assumption or desire to have a career in the music business. I just wanted to prove a point. I was passionately interested in change, and change was needed.”
He is survived by Daley, his daughters, Alexandra and Donatella, and son, Sergio.

Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin 1948- 2016:
Sad to hear the passing of the Mott drummer. They made some of the most enduring music of the 70s and the affection for the band runs very deep.

Mott The Hoople drummer Dale ‘Buffin’ Griffin has died at the age of 67.
He passed away last night, having been diagnosed with Alzheimer’s disease when he was 58.
The band’s keyboard player Verden Allen tells the Hereford Times: “I can’t believe it. Dale was like family, we were very close. We went through a lot together.
“I got a call from our manager Pete Purnell this morning. Dale was a nice, well-spoken man and a brilliant drummer, it’s unbelievable that he’s gone.
“I suppose in some ways it’s a release for him now. He had suffered for many years.”
Griffin was living in a care home near Brecon in Wales when he passed away and was being cared for by his partner Jean Smith.
He played a part in the band’s 2009 40th anniversary reunion shows, performing on the encores. His friend Martin Chambers of The Pretenders filled in on the dates.
As well as his drumming work, Griffin forged a successful career as a music producer. He produced many John Peel’s Radio 1 sessions, including recordings by the Smashing Pumpkins, Soundgarden, Killing Joke, Napalm Death, Pixies, The Damned and Nirvana.
Glenn Frey 1948 – 2016:
Sad to hear the passing of Glenn Frey. The Eagles have been responsible for some of the greatest American music of all time – many of their songs define my own listening in the 1970s.

Eagles star Glenn Frey has died at the age of 67, his family and the band have confirmed.
The singer and guitarist – who founded the band with Don Henley, Bernie Leadon and Randy Meisner in 1971 – passed away today after a battle with intestinal problems.
A statement signed by Frey’s family and his bandmates in the Eagles reads: “It is with the heaviest of hearts that we announce the passing of our comrade, Eagles founder, Glenn Frey, in New York City on Monday, January 18, 2016.
“Glenn fought a courageous battle for the past several weeks but, sadly, succumbed to complications from rheumatoid arthritis, acute ulcerative colitis and pneumonia.
“The Frey family would like to thank everyone who joined Glenn to fight this fight and hoped and prayed for his recovery.
“Words can neither describe our sorrow, nor our love and respect for all that he has given to us, his family, the music community and millions of fans worldwide.”

DL Dairy Blog Update:
A week of high emotion that centered around the very sad passing of David Bowie. I cannot recall being quite so affected by the passing of one of my musical heroes as this one since John Bonham.
On Friday the Vinyl treats at the Vinyl Barn had to be David Bowie: Lodger – an RCA International pressing (I have the first issue) and Lets Dance and Tonight which I may have misplaced over the years –I needed them back on vinyl and it felt wrong to leave them in the racks – I needed that Bowie connection this week of all weeks and felt a lot better for it. Records have always been my salvation right back to when I first heard David Bowie in 1969…
The good lady Janet and I decided that we really needed to be in London on Saturday to pay our respects and it turned out to be something of a Bowie pilgrimage.
In the morning we visited the David Bowie mural in Brixton – this has been the focus of much of the outpouring of love and respect for the man. Being there was moving, comforting and a beautiful place to be.
Here’s some thoughts I wrote down about our visit:
So this morning Janet and I walked towards the David Bowie mural in Brixton. Peaceful, tranquil. It felt like the only place for us to be today.
A few sniffles could be heard amongst the assembled – all with quiet dignity. We laid our tribute (‘’there will always be a Starman waiting in the sky’’) and I wrote on the wall as many were doing.
Looking across at the faces of those paying their respects was simply heart breaking. We were lost souls standing there but not a lost generation. Our generation and many others past and present, will always find solace and inspiration from his wondrous music. But as we gazed at the flowers, tributes and heartfelt notes with a heavy heart and a lump in our throats, we all knew what we had lost…
We didn’t really want to leave this place of David Bowie sanction – it felt like we were leaving him behind forever and so much more…
Somewhat reluctantly, we shuffled away towards the Brixton tube station – the gentle familiar words of Life On Mars from a busker drifting over us in the cold Saturday morning January air…
’’Wonder if he’ll ever know he’s in the bestselling show.’’

Another pic at the David Bowie mural in Brixton… this small child might well be being told that a long time a long this magical man let all the children boogie…
After visiting Brixton, the good lady Janet and I ventured over to 23 Heddon Street where the famous Ziggy Stardust cover photo was shot. Quite a gathering of fans – the mood here was lighter..still poignant but more celebratory…
This is the exact spot where on a rainy January night in 1972, David Bowie posed for the cover photos for his soon to be released Ziggy Stardust album. Looking at the cover of my copy we took along, you can sense the aura of confidence he had at that time ..and some 44 years later here we were in the exact spot where the story really kicked in…
Our David Bowie trail yesterday finally led us to St Anne’s Court in London’s Soho area . – to the building that was once Trident Studios – David recorded some of his most famous work here. It’s commemorated on this listing of some of the most famous recordings that can be seen outside the building… by the way Jimmy Page mixed some of The Song Remains the Same soundtrack here in 1976.
After that we travelled across London to meet with our Sam – a very welcomed rendezvous after a day of much emotion.
Janet and I came back drained but comforted in the fact that we had both made a much needed connection…
Back here, this week the show has gone on with a lot to do. This has included preliminary work on the next TBL issue 41, revising some of the TBL offers and merchandising (more on that soon), research work on a freelance project that has come my way and work on the Evenings With Led Zeppelin book project -this is a huge undertaking that will I’ll be working on with Mike Tremaglio throughout the year.
Alongside David Bowie, the additional passing of Dale Griffin and Glen Frey has made it hard to focus without sad thoughts emerging.
Thankfully, there have been some silver linings and reasons to be cheerful as follows:
I thoroughly enjoyed the BBC4 Music Moguls documentary on the Money Makes – this included an affectionate profile of Peter Grant.

Life On Mars – on UK RCA picture sleeve
Diamond Dogs –on US RCA -note this is one of the few singles he was billed as just plain Bowie.…
All in all a top result.
Yesterday I also picked up the excellent Jazz at 33 and a third – The Ultimate Jazz Collection debut issue. This is a new series of classic jazz albums/magazine packs. – the package includes a 180g vinyl album plus a magazine unfolding the story of the making of the featured album. Issue number presents Kind of Blue by Miles Davis – one of my all time favourite records of which I already have a fair few versions of on LP and CD – but hey, you can never get enough of this classic!
This first issue is selling at a special price of just £4.99. Issue 2 will be John Coltrane’s Blue Train at a special price of £9.99. Thereafter the price of the album/magazine packs be £14.99. At just £4.99 the Miles Davis pack is an absolute bargain. It’s on sale now in the UK at WH Smiths.
In the light of recent events, there has been many a celebratory moment on the player – you really don’t know what you have lost until you play it and that has certainly proved the case when re investigating the wonderful back catalogue of David Bowie, Mott The Hoople and The Eagles. As much as we mourn, we celebrate the music -as it always comes back to the music…
Finally, one thing that has been very apparent these past few days is how important a medium social media can be – notably for me the DL/TBL Facebook page.
It’s been heart warming and comforting to share in the grief of so many like minded fans. May I offer sincere thanks to all who have contributed and shared their comments. It genuinely is a source of comfort and it proves that fundamentally, we are never alone in these challenging times…
