TBL NEWS ROUND UP: JOHN PAUL JONES RECEIVES HONORARY FELLOWSHIP/TVC LIVE TRACKS/TRENT’S IMMIGRANT SONG SOUNDTRACK/JIMMY PAGE METALLICA TRIBUTE MESSAGE/LAST MINUTE TBL CHRISTMAS GIFT IDEAS

John Paul Jones has received an honorary fellowship from Deptford’s Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance in South London.
John, a former Blackheath schoolboy, received the accolade at the prestigious performing arts college in Creekside last Thursday.
He joins the ranks of other acclaimed artists who have received the honour, including Academy nominated composer John Powell, musician Ravi Shanker and Classical FM Managing Director Darren Henley.
Them Crooked Vultures have released two previously unheard live tracks via their facebook site recorded on their world tour last year (possibly from Sydney).
The two tracks – ‘Nobody Loves Me & Neither Do I’ and ‘Scumbag Blues’, were taken from their first studio album and proved to be crowd favourites when they toured last year. You can check them out below.

The new Daniel Craig film “Girl With A Dragon Tattoo” features a cover of Led Zeppelin’s “Immigrant Song” featuring a collaboration between Nine Inch Nails Trent Reznor and Yeah Yeah Yeahs frontwoman Karen O. Interviewed in The Sun last week Karen stated that she, rather strangely had little knowledge of Led Zeppelin.
“I plead total ignorance to Led Zeppelin, I am totally in the dark about them.
“That was the reason I could muster up whatever it took to actually cover that song. I didn’t have any reverence for the track as I didn’t really know it.
“I didn’t even hear the name right when I was asked. I thought they said The Pilgrim Song and I was like, ‘What’s that?’ Yeah I know, it’s pretty embarrassing.”
“When I went into the studio to record the song I was feeling pretty angsty,” says Karen. “And I poured all my torment into the track as Trent’s section was pretty rad.
“It’s ballsy with the primal scream in there which was really fun and liberating to do.”
We here at TBL reckon it’s a splendid remake of the song featuring heavy electronic beats, distortion and a wailing cry from Karen that gives it a futuristic edge.

On the subject of  soundtracks – a new Disney movie based on the classic Edgar Rice Burroughs novel, “John Carter” features, on the soundtrack, an orchestral version of Kashmir by Australian/English all girl string quartert Bond.

‘’A brilliant dissection of the tour that time forgot. What emerges is an intriguing chronicle of the biggest band in the world contemplating their own vastness and legacy. John Paul Jones RULES!

  • Steve said:

I love the fact that Karen O had never heard of Zeppelin never mind the track. I have to say Trent Raznor plays it to safe as it sounds to much like the original. He should hfave given her more freedom. Controversial I know.
Btw looking forward to reading “Feather in the wind” on Christmas Day but Im not supposed to know so shhhhh 🙂

  • Kathy Urich said:
