What an experience. To see John Paul Jones far away from Knebworth or Madison Square Garden, in a bar with 300 people. Totally incredible!
The Shank Hall is a small Bar with no tables and an even smaller stage. There was a nice English chap selling Tee Shirts and CD’s in the corner and two more very friendly englishmen on the sound board. I was standing in front of the sound board and the mix was perfect. The only negative part of the show was that the stage was very low. I’m 6’4″ so I could see Mr. Jones for most of the show except when he played his triple neck solo which he sat down for.
Mr. Jones was smiling throughout the entire show. He looked like he was really having fun. The guy can really move those fingers on the bass. The version’s of Nobody’s Fault But Mine, When the Levee Breaks and Black Dog were simply AWESOME!! I never knew he could play the lap steel so well. I have waited for 30 years to see him this close and last night made a believer out of me. I do feel the his fellow Zeppelin mates made a real poor choice in not including him in there plans.
I spoke with the sound board gentleman about a live release. He hinted that we may see something as he smiled and put the tape I was eying into his pocket. They recorded two tapes. One of the the first Set than one of the remainder of the show. My apologies for not getting my fingers on the tapes. If you have the chance to see this tour, GO SEE THIS!
