Them Crooked Vultures stunned a sold-out the Egyptian Room at Old National Centre in Indianapolis, with an AS GOOD AS IT GETS performance.  Comprised of three mega-musicians, this part-time super group are not stupid birds.  Legendary Led Zeppelin bassist John Paul Jones, Dave Grohl of the Foo Fighters and Queens of the Stone Age frontman Josh Homme are profoundly musically intelligent as anyone within earshot can attest.  This trio of pros circled and delivered a musically precise and mind-altering performance.

For 90-minutes-plus, Them Crooked Vultures hypnotized the audience with hauntingly scary rock n roll unpredictability.  Every song in the set was a roller-coaster surprise as the Vultures twisted and turned melodies and rhythms upside-down and sideways supported by lyrics that only a rock star could write.

Three very different musicians collectively make very different music.   Drummer Dave Grohl is a caffeine-induced Tasmanian devil behind the drum kit.  An obvious house favorite simply because it’s not every day that Rock Royalty comes to town, John Paul Jones was a one-man orchestra playing bass, keytar, organ, mandolin and violin. A set ‘wow moment’ came with “No One Loves Me (Neither Do I)” proving a reminiscent Led Zeppelin vibe.  “Gunman” and “Scumbag Blues” highlighted the bands skill-set with Homme and Jones locked into a downright spookiness fueled by Grohl’s indescribable pounding.  Mr. Grohl is a sight and sound in-and-of himself!  Although not ordained an official Vulture, Alain Johannes’ is an incredibly gifted and supreme guitarist.  But of course, these three guys wouldn’t have selected a rookie to soar on their tour.

Sadly, Them Crooked Vultures have only one more US date before they fly to Europe but keep watch on your radar as this sonic storm should not be missed.
